CA BOOM EAST

Posted by Wes Kennedy on October 20, 2008

Sunday night I attended the opening celebration of CA BOOM East. Located at the Mill Village complex in High Point and anchored by Cisco Brothers 30,000 sq. ft. amazing showroom, 17 vendors displayed products new to High Point. Everyone knows I am huge fan of all things contemporary and I am excited to no end that CA BOOM has come to High Point. In my little tiny opinion High Point is in dire need of more high design vendors and showrooms. It's exciting to walk through showrooms full of original product and to be able to speak to designers who are passionate about more than just sales. I'll shut up now before I get my self in trouble. Please, though, check out ...Read More

Landmark Neutra Building Slated for Demolition

Posted by Wes Kennedy on October 7, 2008

Richard Neutra's
landmark Cyclorama Center at the Gettysburg Battlefield, top, is facing demolition. This amazing building was part of the $1-billion federally sponsored "Mission 66" program, an effort to improve national park visitor facilities from 1956 to 1966. The Cyclorama Center is the only Neutra-designed structure east of the Mississippi River for the Federal Government. It opened in 1962 to the acclaim of officials of the Park Service and was dedicated by President Eisenhower

Today’s National Park Service, has a very different notion of how this site should have been developed. A generation too...Read More

Crafts from the Past

Posted by Wes Kennedy on September 30, 2008

This entry may verge on professional suicide considering who signs my paychecks, but here’s a really cool way to dispose of all those magazines that none of us can bear to discard! When I was a lad, my Grandma and her sisters were into all kinds of country crafts, and my great aunt Geneva gave me a rolled-magazine trash can she had made for my room. (Yes, I was one of those boys that cared how my room looked – still do.) Foolishly, I placed it out for the garbage men to empty and of course they took the whole thing. I’m still not over it. Check out HomeMadeSimple.com for how-to. And it’s a great recycle project for ki...Read More

Burn What You Love

Posted by Wes Kennedy on September 30, 2008

Nothing like sitting around the hearth, warming your soul in your cube at work. There were lots of  these gel-fuel fireplaces in Frankfurt earlier this year. The Apollo Tabletop Fireplace from Carl Mertens is a beautiful objet, but better get it now before the lawsuits start and the CPSC starts dictating the design in order to “protect” us. (I still can’t fathom how fondue pots have managed to escape r...Read More

The Eames Get Licked

Posted by Wes Kennedy on September 25, 2008

On June 17, 2008, in Santa Monica, California, the U.S. Postal Service issued 16 Eames design commemorative stamps. Honoring the husband-and-wife design team of Charles and Ray Eames, this commemorative sheet of 16 stamps was designed by Derry Noyes of Washington, DC, and represents the breadth of their extraordinary body of creative work, which includes architecture, furniture, film and exhibits. I've got mine. Get yours here.

We’re Out of SprayMount!

Posted by Wes Kennedy on September 16, 2008

I thought about the lack of physical evidence of my toil the other day when I asked about buying the old oak flat files from the production department. In this day what could they possibly use those drawers for – this office hasn’t seen negs and progs for 5 years now. Just as Khoi Vinh relates in the article below, sometimes I miss all the cool tools of the trade a graphic designer used (I know rubber cement thinner is deadly but it still smells like love.) In the day, I always grew fond of a...Read More

Industries: Technology

Relish This.

Posted by Wes Kennedy on September 16, 2008

By now you’ve probably seen Design Today, and maybe even wondered what happened to Relish. Tracy and I loved the name Relish, but apparently so did another magazine. (And more to the point, I suspect, their lawyers were more persistent than ours.) We already owned the new name and yadda yadda yadda. Of course there is no replacing the name Relish; the tone and attitude was intrinsic to our concept for the magazine. And names are very important, as I’ve written before, just imagine changing your kid’s name on their 3rd birthday. But passion will win out, and we have a passion for showing you the finer things, so we will continue to bring you the ...Read More

More Coolness From Design Within Reach

Posted by Wes Kennedy on September 15, 2008

DWR is opening new stores in Soho and Santa Monica that will specialize in everything for the well-put-together home except the furniture. Tools for Living, as they’re called, seems a logical expansion of their core business -- I mean who wants to sit down for dinner at their fabulous Saarinen dining table and then be forced to eat off cheap stoneware from the local big box? Not me, Sweetie. And even though I live in High Point, a town with no hope for a Pot Barn much less a DWR, I’m all for this kind of retail. Where else this side of the Pacific could you find a Cedar Sake Bottle? Bea...Read More

NO REPRODUCTIONS HERE

Posted by Wes Kennedy on August 25, 2008

This past Saturday I visited the Nasher Museum on the campus of Duke U to check out a new show called “El Greco to Velazquez, Art during the reign of Philip III.” I’ve never been a big fan of old oil paintings, but because I live in High Point, I tend to jump at the chance to see art of this magnitude when it’s within driving distance. It would be shame not to. The show continues through November 9, so if you can, check it out when you’re here for the HP market.

The museum building itself is worth the drive. ...Read More

Very Normal Rooms

Posted by Wes Kennedy on August 25, 2008
Like me, I know your home is MetHome material, but for some reason Donna won’t return my calls! Don’t fret, you can upload pics of your cool pad at NormalRoom.com. As research, this site is a fascinating look into real people’s homes. Most of it is quite un-spectacular; the appeal is more like rubber-necking an accident on the interstate. (Remember, I've never claimed to be nice.) I’ve spent way too much time ogling this site – don’t tell Jenny.

Ciao!

PS: This is not my house and I hate Staffordshire dogs.
