provides fellowships
for advanced
professionals
in all
fields (natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, creative arts)
except the performing
arts.
Fellowships are not available for students. The Foundation only
supports individuals. It
does not make grants to institutions or organizations. The
Foundation selects its Fellows on the basis
of two separate competitions,
one for the United States
and Canada, the other for Latin America and

National Book Award Finalists 2008, Guggenheim Fellows. One of the three 2008 Nobel Prize winners in Physics is Guggenheim Fellow, Yoichiro Nambu '71. The 2007 Annual Report is available here. The 2008 MacArthur Fellows include four Guggenheim Fellowship recipients: Stephen Houston, ‘02, Anthropology and Cultural Studies; Jennifer Tipton, ‘86, Theater Arts; Nancy Siraisi, ‘82, History of Science and Technology; and Miguel Zenón, ‘08, Music Composition. Kay Ryan, a 2004 Guggenheim Fellow in Poetry, has been named the country's Poet Laureate for 2008-2009. Many past Poet Laureates have also been Guggenheim Fellows. This impressive list includes Charles Simic, Donald Hall, Louise Glück, Billy Collins, Stanley Kunitz, Robert Pinsky, Robert Hass, Rita Dove, Mona Van Duyn, Joseph Brodsky, Mark Strand, and many others. The 2008 Pulitzer Prize winners include five Guggenheim Fellows: Junot Diaz '99, Fiction; Daniel Walker Howe '83; History; Robert Hass '79, Poetry; Philip Schultz '05, Poetry; and David Lang '87, Music. To date, 229 Guggenheim Fellows have received Pulitzer Prizes. A full-page announcement with the names of all new Fellows was printed by the New York Times on 4/7/08 and is available here.
