Chinese Business Woman Assaulted by Homeland Security Inspector

The graphic front page newspaper photo has played into the worst fears of the provincial river port city of Tianjin- showing a local business woman beaten so badly that her face appears a sickly black and blue. Her eyes are swollen shut.

The victim is a Chinese tourist who was recently attacked during an outing to Niagara Falls, on the U.S.-Canadian border. But the suspect isn’t any violent criminal or quick-hit mugger. The man who allegedly punched Zhao Yan repeatedly and doused her with pepper spray was an inspector with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Robert Rhodes is accused of throwing the 37-year-old gym equipment saleswoman against a wall, kneeing her in the face and striking her head on the ground. Rhodes, 43, was charged with violating her civil rights and faces 10 years in prison if convicted. He said he thought Zhao was with a man from whom officers had just confiscated marijuana.

The attack has touched a nerve with Chinese officials and the general public. In what the state-run media has called an unusual move, Foreign minister Li Zhaoxing called on U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to launch a “serious and thorough investigation” into the July 21 incident. A Chinese-American trade group said the United States bears ‘unshirkable responsibility for what it called a serious human rights violation on American soil.

For many Chinese, the attack confirms the worst nightmares of foreign travel and raised concerns about the safety of Chinese nationals living abroad, especially in the United States. Some say that the attack on a woman by a male police officer illustrates the image of the United States as an international bully.

“I have been to many countries in the past for business purposes, and the United States is the most barbarous,” Zhao told the state-run China Daily newspaper. The paper reported that Zhao has hired an American lawyer and plans to file a lawsuit seeking $5 million in damages.

College student Liu Peili said Zhao’s experience illustrated the gap between the virtues preached by the United States and the reality of life within its borders.

“America always points its finger at other countries, including China, about their so-called human rights violations,” the 22-year-old Tianjin native said.

So why then should an incident as ugly as this occur right there in the United States? America always seems to do exactly the opposite of what it tells other countries to do.”

For many in the city, the incident harks back to the 1999 American bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. Although U.S. officials apologized for what they called an error, many Chinese have long thought the attack was intentional. Some believe that Zhao’s assault hints at xenophobic sentiment in the United States. “America is a very safe place for people who live there,” Liu said. “But not if it’s not your country.”

In Tianjin, a city of 10 million people an hour’s drive from the capital, Beijing, the incident has prompted days of media coverage, including two full pages in editions of Metro Express.

The paper has received 300 calls and emails from readers- most offering sympathy for Zhao and expressing anger at the United States. Several businesspeople related similar tales of violence that occurred while traveling in the United States, and one Tianjin native living in Chicago said he felt afraid in America, according to a report published in the newspaper.

Following the assault, Zhao received notes and flowers from some of the 2,000 Tianjin natives living in New York, Metro Express said, adding that she was approached by many “average Americans who just repeated, ‘We are sorry.’”

Zhao told authorities that she and two friends were crossing the popular Rainbow Bridge near a U.S. Customs checkpoint when Rhodes attacked. For his part, Rhodes said in a statement that he grabbed a Chinese woman and two others ran away when he asked them to come to an inspection station. He said he used pepper spray on the woman when she swung her arms at him.

A business group called the Preparatory Committee of the Commission for the Promotion of U.S.-China Free Trade has criticized U.S. officials for the attack. Although it understands America’s need to beef up security following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the group said U.S. immigration officers have no right to assault foreign businesspeople without bothering to find out the basic facts.

Shopping at a Tianjin supermarket, Zhang Weihao said women were not humiliated this way in China. “Women are supposed to be respected everywhere in the world,” he said. “But apparently not in America.”

Got news for you.

I made a stop over in HongKong for a connecting flight. The airport guard patted me down heavily while the white guy easily breezed into the entrance.

JPMA :

Hell, will you stop blaming Filipinos?

You use the Filipinos during Memorial Day to remind the US that there are Asian soldiers.

Now you are using us again for this political propaganda of yours.

The Filipino community is not attacking you, its the Republicans, DUH.

Now you can't fight them because you are afraid to be "dragged" again to internments, no?

So now you just have to air it out to the Filipinos.

Go find a mirror and bark at yourself JPMA.

Next time you pull something like that again, I am going to make a book on how horrible the Japanese are during the war.

Thank God everyday that we dont make you pay for the things your ancestors done.

We are not considered to be AMERICAN CITIZENS by the White man or any of their minions.

That is why these types of situations occur. And they will occur again, and again, and AGAIN!

People of color fight only for the scraps that the White man leaves for us. However, all other ethnicity’s except for us are considered to be citizens and ethnic minorities--and they receive nothing to be thankful for. The conundrum is that if you assimilate into the White American Pop-Culture--really no culture; adopt an Anglo first name; lose your ability to speak your family's language; revolt against eating your family's traditional cuisine--that White people queue for hours to be seated for; court only White males as the short-cut to success; move to the suburbs only to appear financially successful; condemn your family's roots and those who choose to keep them; and etc.

Then:

YOU WILL ONLY BECOME AN ETHINIC MINORITY AND FIGHT FOR THE SCRAPS THAT THE WHITE MAN IS WILLING TO GIVE YOU!

Furthermore, look for more of these incidents to occur.

Contradiction is rife in the USA; condemn the Chinese for human rights violations and the lack of freedom for individuality, but not the Japanese for the same so-called infractions. Why? Because Japan is an ally, and China is called a competitor, or a regime, or a future enemy. There are no human rights abuses in the USA.....correct? Tell that to the Hispanics that get stopped in the street for papers in places like Palm Springs; or African-Americans in Augusta, who cannot play in the same country clubs that I can--they will take Asian money or Asian notoriety; or Native Americans, whose names are used to dot towns, communities, natural landmarks, etc., all over areas east of the Mississippi...but have you ever met a Native American family in those areas?

Bottom line, do not become an ethnic minority. Learn to use the White man's laws to protect yourself and to be pro-active, enabling you to attack their incursions; carry yourself with the demeanor that makes the White man and all of their controlled ethnic minority lackeys--Malkin--fear you, or fear the complications of interacting with you improperly; and lastly, prepare for the coming storm.

When the Skinheads take over, my family and I will have alternatives to whatever their Neo-Nazi programs will have in store for us.

WILL YOURS?
