Ebony_Hime, don't worry it's not surprising non-Chinese think JLC was a good movie. It would be a good mother-daughter story if it wasn't for the blatant misrepresentation of true Chinese culture and traditions.

Basically Amy Tan makes up stupid things like:

"In America, nobody will say her worth is
measured by the loudness of her husband’s belch."

What kind of bullshit is this? Guess what, nobody says that in China either!

But Amy Tan makes up stuff like this in order to fool the non-Chinese audience into thinking Chinese culture is completely misogynistic. Of course non-Chinese audiences want to hear that their own culture is so enlightened and liberal, it sells books!

Authors may have the right to retell stories but the problem here is non-Chinese people think it is non-fiction and when I see schools offer JLC as an example of Chinese culture you can imagine I might have a problem with that. Especially in Amy Tan's world where all Asian men are misogynistic tradition oriented bad guys.

Are they? I my mind it would be difficult to take anything (e.g., skin color, religion, wealth, or what not) out of a person in order to see "the person as s/he really is". Trouble starts when we are only judged by one part of our being (which we may not even identify with ourself, or just wnat to use stategically when we ourselves so wishes) at the expense of other stuff (that we would like people to see/appreciate).
