My interview with Paul Baloches busts the myth of the millionare musician

PaulBaloche.jpgA few months ago, while doing a cover story for the Christian Voice Magazine on the Compassionart project headed by Delirious frontman Martin Smith, I had a chance to chat with worship leader Paul Baloche, who took part in the retreat in Scotland where a dozen artists gathered to write songs to benefit the needy.

The discussion this week about worship and commerce and the church reminded me that Paul had some great insight into the topic. He's perhaps one of the most humble artists I've ever talked to, and yet you sing some of his songs every week in your church.

Here are some excerpts from my interview; the words in italics and brackets are my summary of the questions I asked or clarifications of his answers (since this is just an excerpt of a very long interview). The rest are his words.

The commerce of church - when do we cross the line?

michaelguglielmuccicropped.jpgIn a post yesterday about Planetshaker's Michael Guglielmucci (who wrote many of the band's songs) and his admission that he had been lying for two years about having cancer to cover his addiction to porn, I threw out this question: "Are we bowing at the altar of the megachurch, rather than the foot of the cross, because it's 'culturally relevant?'"

Someone commented that Guglielmucci's deception wasn't necessarily an indictment on his church, and he was right. That question shouldn't have necessarily been part of that post. It's just that those two questions seem intricately linked in my mind.

So today, let me separate the question from the Michael Guglielmucci issue and open that up for discussion.

Planetshakers' Michael Guglielmucci admits porn addiction, faking cancer

michaelguglielmucci.jpgThe Planetshakers City Church in Melbourne, Australia has seen incredible growth since it founded in 2004, believing, as their website says, that "God has the power to transform and revolutionise the lives of all people, propelling them into their God-given destiny." Their services draw thousands. The Planetshakers Band tours internationally, to places like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa, and has released several albums.

And until recently, Michael Guglielmucci was a pastor at the church and part of the Planetshakers band, inspiring his followers, many of them young people, with his brave two-year battle with terminal leukemia.

On August 12, Guglielmucci admitted that he's been faking the illness, fooling not only his congregation, but his parents and his own wife.

What drove Guglielmucci to the deception? An obsession with pornography, that started when he was 12 years old.

Monday morning trivia question

Think you know your Christian music history? See if you know the answer to today's Monday morning trivia question:

This edgy Christian artist, known for taking shots at everyone from religious leaders to talk show hosts, also had a hand in the success of artists like Sixpence None The Richer and Newsboys. Who is he?

Bonus question: what is the name of the band he fronted in the early 90s?

(PS see if you can get it without using google ...)
