A pet rabbit has been credited with saving an Australian couple from a fire that started in their house while they slept. The rabbit woke its owners, Michelle Finn and her partner Gerry Keogh, by scratching on their bedroom door when smoke poured through the house in the Macleod area of Melbourne.
“Gerry only got home from work about 5.30 because he works a night shift and about 7am we both woke to the sound of a thumping rabbit,” Ms Finn told The Age newspaper in Melbourne. “We heard windows breaking at the back of the house and got up to see what was wrong and the house was on fire.”
Neighbours arrived with hoses to help before fire crews arrived. Firefighters said that a smoke alarm had been removed while the house was being renovated.
Ms Finn said that the pet, named Rabbit, was allowed to roam freely around the house unless they had guests. “It was very lucky for both of us,” she said. “I don’t think he was very impressed \.”
The fire caused A$80,000 (£39,000) of damage and ruined two years of renovations, which the couple had just completed.
Mick Smith, a commander for the Metropolitan Fire Service in Melbourne, said that Rabbit had played a crucial role in preventing a tragedy. “The rabbit saved the couple,” he said.
Mr Keogh, a nightclub employee, said that although he and Ms Finn faced the difficult task of rebuilding, Rabbit had also been left homeless by the fire, which ruined his cage.

Bunnies are one of the most underestimated pets. They are clever, social and amusing. Little do people know that they have vibrant personalities, yet each one is different. I've had several bunnies and one would come to you whenever you called him, yet another was completely litter box trained.
Elana, Vancouver, Canada
I had a mini lop-eared bunny by the name of Elvis for 8 years and although he was 'high maintenance' I loved him dearly. Over thoses years I heard Elvis do the 'thump' a few times and it is difficult to miss. What a great bunny you have. You can certainly overlook some bunny 'indiscretions'!
Cheryl C, Thornhill, Canada
Bunnies are a man's best friend. They're so cute! My parents had one named Ezekiel. When my mom was pregnant with me, she wanted to have a home birth, but when the time came, neither of my parents knew what to do and started freaking out. Ezekiel calmed everyone down and delivered me.
Ezekial, Boston, USA
bunnies are brilliant and cute! Back in the 80s a pack of them set our decrepit barn ablaze by chewing on electrical wires. We were so upset, but one was good with numbers and showed us how the insurance check would cover the cost of a brand new barn. Turns out bunnies save a lot more than lives!

animals are awesome. that is why i am an animal rights advocate and will always be.

as a fellow bunny owner and rescuer,Rabbitt was only doing what he could, and that was to save his family from a certain death.Rabbits are much smarter than most people think. They are a great pet when they aren't left sitting in a cage with no attention.
Denise Donovan, Owosso, USA
"Look, it's Rabbit I think he's trying to tell us something."
"What's that Rabbit? The house is on fire? We've got to call the fire brigade."

I have had rabbits for years, and many, many house rabbits; at the moment I have 2 french lops, a netherland dwarf, 2 lionheads, 3 rescue cross-breeds and a flemmish giant. Yours must be the most loved at the moment! 'Rabbit' was amazing. Well sone Rabbit. You have an amazing little pet.
Zoe Dixon, Deepcar,
Well done Rabbit! I'm another rabbit owner (or slave really) and know the couple will already love him - but now they owe him so much.
I hope his health didn't suffer in the smoke and heat.
Ros, Sunderland, UK
I've had free-range house rabbits for several years. They are instinctively aware of the slightest danger and will alert their cohabitants -- including humans -- by thumping their back feet and scurrying about. In this case, lives were saved. Amazing creatures, and cute as hell. Good bunny.
Phil Y, Orange, CA,
I've had house rabbits since 1992. They're smart and affectionate. Once you do some prep work -- covering cords -- they're fine. Really. Well, I did have a small carpet-chewing incident. But as long as you redirect the instincts, as you would with a cat and a cat scratching post, no problem.
tina, san diego, usa
I have a house rabbit, soots, hes quite a little character, there very clean and very amusing and make great companions. Bunnies are definately very intelligent creatures, soots is more than capable of figuring things out for himself, he regularly amazes me.
Debbie, Leicester, uk
Rabbits are very smart. I have had a pet bunny since 2001 and he has saved my life numerous times. When I was deployed overseas, he spotted and destroyed 2 Iraqi tanks that had crept up on my position, before I even knew what was happening. They are smart (seriously) I'd kiss that little face.
Martin, Harlem, USA
More interesting bunnies in the cave at Caerbannog.
Aaron, Los Angeles, USA
I had a rabbit who was enrolled at Harvard and graduated third in his class. Of course, his major was carrot-minching.
Fred , Cedar River, United States
My house rabbit alerted me to an earthquake which hit in a Southern California city. It went crazy, running around and jumping as if something was wrong about 15 tminutes before the earthquake and didn't stop until the earthquake struck.
Sally, USA,
I too had a house rabbit "save the day" on a couple of occasions. He grabbed my trouser leg and pulled me over to show me a fish that had jumped out of the fish bowl in time for me to save it and woke me to show me a rabid bat in the house. Rabbits can be brilliant!
mary, Rhinebeck, USA
Great story! Rabbits rule (well this one does anyway). I didn't know rabbits were so alert. This is a great testament as to why house pets (rabbits, dogs, etc.) should NOT be caged. Can you imagine the horror to have your pet die in such a fire? And 2 people! BRAVE RABBIT!!!! You are hopping great!
Ellen Hilburn, Washington, D.C. , U.S.A.
Yes, very impressive bunny. But if I was looking for something to save me from fires, I'd put my money on a smoke detector, not a rabbit. Not as cute, but much cheaper and less mess.
Dave T, Los Angeles, USA
Great story! I once had a pet rabbit named "Ace" who often flew in my Piper Super Cub aircraft. Once while flying the Alaska Wilderness I went to sleep at the stick. My rabbit "Ace" quickly realized the danger and landed the plane from the back seat safely on a gravel bar in the river without inc
Bill, anchorage, United States
MNot impressed. I had a rabbit named Clyde in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the rabbit saved my life. My car plunged off a bridge into a river. My rabbit somehow knew what was happening and broke through the windshield and pulled me to shore. We were on the way to the vet. He got a carrot
Tony, Minneapolis,
According to previous posts, Rabbit's routinely chew through wire. Hmm I wonder if 'Rabbit' coiuld have chewed through some of the rennovation wiring, which created an electical hazard and thereby actually started the fire - purely by accident. Good it's a smart bunny and saved the day post opps!
Patty, LA, usa
I have had pet rabbits for over 10 years, and am not bit surprised that a pet rabbit would save his people;). Buns are smarter than most people would ever give them credit for. Great story;-)
Nancy, USA,
Wonderful! House rabbits make wonderful pets. In reaction to the first comment, once you rabbit proof your home(cover, protect eletrical cords) not all rabbits will do harm if unsupervised, if you give them enough hay and other things to chew. Happy that Gerry and Michelle and Rabbit are not injured
Sapphire, Minneapolis,
hopefully they saw the bunny side ...

Joe Brinskele, Granite Bay,
Me too I have a free rabbit in the house. And one night it was scatching my bedroom door. It was my cell phone battery too low and was beeping. So I know now, when something is wrong in the house, my rabbit will tell-me

What a lovely rabbit.

I have a small rabbit too named Freddy. They are one of the best pets to have, they are playful, moody and emotional.. Good for the rabbit..
Bud, Bradenton, fl
My friend has a rabbit, and one day the rabbit was going crazy running in and out of the bedroom trying to get us to follow it..and when we went out to the living room, a fish had jumped out of the tank and was laying on the floor flopping a bit. The rabbit saved the fish! It was really cute.
t, HB, CA,
It would have been the second hero rabbit if the one that attacked Carter had finished the job. :)
Tim, Tucson,
I was attacked by a rabbit once while hunting. It chased me around a field when I was 12. I thought it was rabid so I ran from it. Jeff, San Diego Ca. USA

I think a smoke detector would be a great addition to their renovations.
Will, Lubbock, Texas,
Domestic Rabbits are so smart. I once had one named Fluffy. It was so smart it knew how to have just the right taste with a wine sauce.
Idris, Big Wood, USA
As a person who has had a house rabbit for a pet since 1992, I'm not surprised. Rabbits -when housed indoors with humans, are as -if not more-intellegent than dogs and cats.
The one I have now is litterbox trained and doesn't chew wires or furniture.
Peter, Sandy Springs, USA
What? I thought the attack on jimmy carter had redeemed rabbit-kind! This is just bonus
Johnny Scrib, Jacksonville, USA
always good to get more rabbit news.
frenz, manchester,
Our former President Jimmy Carter was attacked by a rabbit once.
David H, Atlanta, USA
Domestic rabbits can be surprisingly intelligent and full of their own personalities. I am surprised this bunny runs around the house as many of them will eat electrical cords and wood trim when unsupervised. On the other hand, they are easy to litterbox train once they are spayed or nuetered.
Eileen Gannon, Midlothia, USA
Rabbits can be very smart. I had one that was house trained and could give cues when he was hungry or thirsty and he loved to go for walks.
Chuck, Hialeah, USA
Hooray for the silly wabbit!
John Berkstresser, Bethlehem PA, USA
I'm "hopping" this never happens to me!
Garry, Troy, MI, USA
Bunnies will chew through anything including electric cords if left to their own devices.
Timothy A. Bear, Minneapolis, USA
Rabbits just do not get the credit they deserve. They are filled with surprises! I suppose they can't save you though if you keep them in a cage! Yay!!! In loving memory of John B. Ramsey.
Kelly Ryan, Pittsburgh, PA
There are rabbits in Australia?
joe price, norfolk, va, USA
The rabbit didn't want to die. Thats why it was scratching the door! It wasn't being altruistic. I can hear him now:
'Sumbunny sabe me!'
James, Virginia Beach, USA
The fire marshall should take a look at their "renovations" first when searching for the cause of the fire. If they've been doing them themselves as they say, I wouldn't be surprised if it's their fault.
John , San Clemente, USA
Sounds like a hare raising experience.
W. Scott Lyter, Mechanicsburg, PA, USA
Finally, a rabbit has redeemed the species after the brutal attack on jimmy carter so many years ago...
