Managing Information Risk (12582.89kb) - A guide for Accounting Officers, Board members and Senior Information Risk Owners

This guidance is designed for senior staff across government, particularly accounting officers, board members and chairs of audit committees. It gives detailed advice on how to assess and manage risks associated with creating, using and storing information. The guide aims to give a non-specialist some insight into the nature of risks in managing information in the public sector, with questions to ask, and potential sources of assurance, that can support accounting officers in managing information risk.

The UK National Archives has developed a set of standards to help government departments and others assess commercially available digital preservation solutions. The standards comprise a description of what a digital preservation solution should do, and a simple checklist to determine whether a commercial offering fully addresses this. The standards will inform the work we are doing to create a shared service to ensure the long-term survival of electronic records that are needed for ongoing business use. They will also support departments, and others, who wish to buy software from commercial suppliers. We are putting these draft standards and requirements out for public consultation and would welcome feedback to digitalcontinuity@nationalarchives.gov.uk. Consultation of the first draft standards will close in Autumn 2008. We will issue second draft standards for consultation in 2009.
