Secret Intelligence Service

The Secret Intelligence Service, sometimes known as MI6, originated in 1909 as the Foreign Section of the Secret Service Bureau which was responsible for gathering intelligence overseas. After the First World War, the Foreign Section became a separate service and began increasingly to be referred to as the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), a title that it has continued to use to the present day and now enshrined in statute in the Intelligence Services Act 1994. The principle role of SIS is the production of secret intelligence on issues concerning the UK’s vital interests in accordance with requirements established by the JIC and approved by Ministers.
