Water Quality
Pollution

Even if you live miles from the Pacific Ocean, you may be polluting it without realizing it. Things we use in and around our homes and businesses such as motor oil, paint, cleaners, pesticides and fertilizers can be washed by rain or a garden hose into a storm drain in the street. These pollutants then flow from the storm drain to a flood control channel which eventually empties into a local creek, the ocean or the bay. Storm water and urban runoff pollution can harm marine life as well as coastal and wetland habitats. It can also degrade recreation areas such as beaches, harbors and bays. IRWD does not maintain storm drains - local cities and the county of Orange oversee this system of pipes - but we support all efforts to improve water quality and reduce the threat of pollution. We are responsible for your drinking water. If handled improperly, hazardous materials can also contaminate local groundwater, one of our drinking water sources. If you would like more information on the proper use, storage and disposal of hazardous materials, please visit the household hazardous waste recycling center in Irvine.
