Malkin Shoots Geraldo Down In Flames

Regular readers know of my dislike for the all-theatrics-no-facts Geraldo....

Michelle Malkin takes him on after another whiny outburst by the oft-discredited idiot tries to slam her. This is WAY TOO GOOD!

I like most of Michelle's positions, and on dealing with Horrible Geraldo, we speak the same language!

Live Aid - A J-O-K-E!!!!!

A Joke because the participants are "non-participants" in the entire story of saving energy.....probably because they are just too "special" to need to comply with the demands of participation in saving actual "ENERGY!"

Just go READ THIS!!!!

My God, are we blessed by these idiots, or what?????

Do as I say, not as I do.....I am S-P-E-C-I-A-L!!!!!! Just cause!!!!!

This is idiocy, and deserves the MSM coverage it does not get!

OSAMA is D-O-A!!!!

That seems more and more of a fact.......

The new vid of UBL is from 2001-2002?????

This is a problem for the troops.....the leader appears dead/dismembered/unavailable/detained, etc......

Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit) "Splains it all Lucy".....

The man is either deader than a dormouse, or hiding so deep his own followers cannot connect....take your pick & in that case he is completely ineffective anyway!

I prefer and suspect the former.

Usama Bin Laden is Dead......Long Live Usama (in the minds of his deluded followers!)

Gotta Ask My Grandchildren!

One of the things about which I am vexed is the way our young folk receive news....or IF they receive news!

I am a now middle-60s male who is probably more attuned to news and what happens than most as I spent several years as a radio-TV newsman/News Director back in the dark ages of the late 60s and early 70s. Today I have become a three-decades-removed newsman who ended his career in other fields.....

As for the kids of today.....and i am blessed with Grands who are ages 19 down to 3.....I need to know what is making them tick in news. in currency of the local/national/international awareness.

Guess I need to devise a method of checking with them in person to see what, if anything, they are doing for "news" awareness.

Duchess and I leave next Sunday on a trip of three weeks and one stop includes 4 days with Grands (my abbreviation for grand kids) who range from a super-smart 13 year old blond gal to a neat, sports-oriented 10 year old boy and then their 2.5 year-old younger Bro who is still blissfully unaware of news (hopefully!)

I have to plan how to approach this so as to avoid the "what ARE you thinking, Grandpa" stare!

More after I plan/scheme!

Our National Anthem! - Do You Really Know It?

I sincerely doubt it......I did not.

Oh, yes I know the 1st Verse!!!

But what of the OTHER 3?????

Yes, what of them?????

Isaak Asimov once took the time to actually SING all four versus in an appearance he made....AND he offered the historical facts of how the anthem was written, why it was written, and then explained its meaning.......

As an American, you need to know this.......

Read it and try not to be thrilled to the core!!!!!!

"NO REFUGE COULD SAVE : BY DR. ISAAC ASIMOV

I was once asked to speak at a luncheon. Taking my life in my hands, I announced I was going to sing our national anthem -- all four stanzas. This was greeted with loud groans. One man closed the door to the kitchen, where the noise of dishes and cutlery was loud and distracting. "Thanks, Herb," I said.

"That's all right," he said. "It was at the request of the kitchen staff"

I explained the background of the anthem and then sang all four stanzas. Let me tell you, those people had never heard it before -- or had never really listened. I got a standing ovation. But it was not me; it was the anthem.

More recently, while conducting a seminar, I told my students the story of the anthem and sang all four stanzas. Again there was a wild ovation and prolonged applause. And again, it was the anthem and not me.

So now let me tell you how it came to be written.

In 1812, the United States went to war with Great Britain, primarily over freedom of the seas. We were in the right. For two years, we held off the British, even though we were still a rather weak country. Great Britain was in a life and death struggle with Napoleon. In fact, just as the United States declared war, Napoleon marched off to invade Russia. If he won, as everyone expected, he would control Europe, and Great Britain would be isolated. It was no time for her to be involved in an American war.

At first, our seamen proved better than the British. After we won a battle on Lake Erie in 1813, the American commander, Oliver Hazard Perry, sent the message, "We have met the enemy and they are ours." However, the weight of the British navy beat down our ships eventually. New England, hard-hit by a tightening blockade, threatened secession.

Meanwhile, Napoleon was beaten in Russia and in 1814 was forced to abdicate. Great Britain now turned its attention to the United States, launching a three-pronged attack.

The northern prong was to come down Lake Champlain toward New York and seize parts of New England.

The southern prong was to go up the Mississippi, take New Orleans and paralyze the west.

The central prong was to head for the mid-Atlantic states and then attack Baltimore, the greatest port south of New York. If Baltimore was taken, the nation, which still hugged the Atlantic coast, could be split in two. The fate of the United States, then, rested to a large extent on the success or failure of the central prong.

The British reached the American coast, and on August 24, 1814, took Washington, D.C. Then they moved up the Chesapeake Bay toward Baltimore. On September 12, they arrived and found 1,000 men in Fort McHenry, whose guns controlled the harbor. If the British wished to take Baltimore, they would have to take the fort.

On one of the British ships was an aged physician, William Beanes, who had been arrested in Maryland and brought along as a prisoner. Francis Scott Key, a lawyer and friend of the physician, had come to the ship to negotiate his release.

The British captain was willing, but the two Americans would have to wait. It was now the night of September 13, and the bombardment of Fort McHenry was about to start.

As twilight deepened, Key and Beanes saw the American flag flying over Fort McHenry. Through the night, they heard bombs bursting and saw the red glare of rockets. They knew the fort was resisting and the American flag was still flying. But toward morning the bombardment ceased, and a dread silence fell. Either Fort McHenry had surrendered and the British flag flew above it, or the bombardment had failed and the American flag still flew.

As dawn began to brighten the eastern sky, Key and Beanes stared out at the fort, trying to see which flag flew over it. He and the physician must have asked each other over and over, "Can you see the flag?"

After it was all finished, Key wrote a four stanza poem telling the events of the night. Called "The Defense of Fort McHenry," it was published in newspapers and swept the nation. Someone noted that the words fit an old English tune called, "To Anacreon in Heaven" -- a difficult melody with an uncomfortably large vocal range. For obvious reasons, Key's work became known as "The Star Spangled Banner," and in 1931 Congress declared it the official anthem of the United States.

Now that you know the story, here are the words. Presumably, the old doctor is speaking. This is what he asks Key:

Oh! say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
Oh! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

("Ramparts," in case you don't know, are the protective walls or other elevations that surround a fort.) The first stanza asks a question. The second gives an answer:

On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mist of the deep
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep.
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream
'Tis the star-spangled banner. Oh! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

"The towering steep" is again, the ramparts. The bombardment has failed, and the British can do nothing more but sail away, their mission a failure. In the third stanza I feel Key allows himself to gloat over the American triumph. In the aftermath of the bombardment, Key probably was in no mood to act otherwise? During World War I when the British were our Staunchest allies, this third stanza was not sung. However, I know it, so here it is:

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion

A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

(The fourth stanza, a pious hope for the future, should be sung more slowly than the other three and with even deeper feeling):

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation,

Blest with victory and peace, may the Heaven - rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause is just,
And this be our motto --"In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I hope you will look at the national anthem with new eyes. Listen to it, the next time you have a chance, with new ears. Pay attention to the words. And don't let them ever take it away ... not even one word of it."

THREE YEARS?????

I have had this blog up and running for three years. That seems impossible!

My volume remains low....comfortable, but low.....

According to the "Bear" I am usually ranked 2700 to 3000 in his domain.....That actually is pretty darn good when you figure there are an estimated 12 MILLION blogs out there.

Of course, I am not in the class with the bigs.....several of whom I exchange emails with regularly.

However, I have to say....most of my conversations and/or communication is with folks at my level.

I love blogging.....I love bloggers, and I am truly proud that we have accomplished as much as we have regarding blogger power in influence of the politicos!

I am particularly proud of our push to stop the disastrous Immigration bill!!!

Happy Anniversary to My Blog! May there be may more years of said and same.....Perhaps I shall be a bit more attentive to the blog, and the facts I present.... BUT nothing will interfere with my retirement....and my RV and Picture blogs......

YES, I maintain several blogs......

One Story....Bias Shows in Headlines....

The long-awaited, and much maligned (pre-release) story on Iraq progress is due out today. It will show progress on 8 points....no progress on 8 points and mixed results on two points.

The vaunted Main Stream Media (Read antique media) headlines the story.....BUT their online headlines seem as if related to different stories......

FOX - "Report: Progress in Iraq, 8 of 18 key benchmarks met."

ABC - "Bush's Iraq Progress Report shows No Progress on Key Points"

MSNBC - "Mixed Review, Report says Iraq Government Fails on half of Benchmarks."

CBS - "White House to give Mixed Review on Iraq."

CNN - "Iraq Benchmarks Report Shows Progress at 50-50."

How does the same story generate such disparate headlines? Bias....Is the glass half full or half empty?

FOX, CBS & CNN seem similar.......However, notice the words leaping off the page for MSNBC (FAILS on half) and ABC (No Progress on Key Points)

We got no media bias......Har Har!

That's right! Many folks see the Liberal educators who populate most of our universities today as a problem or a serious problem......60% Do so!

The actual story is on Dr. Helen's site. For the uninitiated, Dr. Helen is the lovely and talented wife of Glenn Reynolds, "Instapundit!"

She is right of course. The findings of way too many explorations of higher education all agree that liberalism is rampant. Time to take back our education system.

"SURGE" IS Working....Despite Demo Position!

The Iraq Surge is working, according to the actual reporters who are....YOU KNOW.... THERE!!!

One of the problems of this war from the git-go has been the disparity between what was happening and what was reported by a hugely agenda-driven media! A media which chose to use quite suspect sources, while they continued to sit in the Green Zone and write.

Now, one of the people who has actually been out there Tells The Story!

Michael Yon is another imbed who actually reports facts.....not what he wants to see.

This is likely the very first war in which "citizen-media" reports truth while the MSM fiddles (and burns!)

MEL Responds (Again!)

MEL RESPONDS!

This shall have to do folks as my "Title" block is non-working currently in blogspot....(who knows why!)

At any rate......Mel again responds to my email....a week and a half later, but a response none-the-less......

"Dear Mr. DeLand:

Thank you for contacting me regarding immigration reform. I appreciate hearing from you and would like to respond to your concerns.

As you may know, on June 28, 2007, the Senate voted to set aside debate once again on the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 (S.1639).

I firmly believe addressing this issue in a comprehensive manner is critical to our nation’s security and continued prosperity. While securing our borders is top priority, we must also address the economic and law enforcement realities of having millions of illegal immigrants already living and working in the United States. Any solution to this problem must be practical to be effective. Efforts to secure our borders should be coupled with necessary changes to our current ambiguous and ineffective immigration policies to maximize security for our country. Additionally, gaining operational control of the border will not cease the problem if we do not gain control of our employment system. Please know that, I will continue to work with President Bush and my colleagues in Congress to develop a plan that will halt the flow of illegal immigrants crossing our border while implementing needed changes to our immigration laws.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Do not hesitate to contact me with any additional questions or comments. For more information about issues and activities important to Florida, please sign up for my weekly newsletter at http://martinez.senate.gov.

Sincerely,

Mel Martinez
United States Senator"

Thanks for the response Senator.....HOWEVER......you continue to discuss the fact we cannot seal the border without addressing the needs of the 12 million here already..

Plus.....You seem to feel current laws are unworkable.....then WHY were they passed, and WHY should we believe anything coming from the Congress?

"Me, Me...." The Clarion (Condum) Call Rang Out!

This is too good......

From AP......

MELBOURNE, Australia — A major condom brand said Friday it expected thousands of applicants for a new unpaid job on offer — condom tester.

Durex said 200 adult Australians — men and women — are wanted to test a range of its condoms.

While the successful applicants will not be paid, each will receive a pack of Durex sex products, a chance to win 1,000 Australian dollars ($857 U.S.), plus professional prestige, the company said in a statement.

"Who wouldn't want to have a chance with an actual authorized professional?" Durex marketing manager Sam White asked.

"Durex is expecting thousands of applicants," the statement said.

Hopefuls must explain in their applications why they would make "expert" condom testers.

How they test the condoms is not specified, but testers must provide honest feedback about how they find the products.

No deadline is set for evaluating a range of four condoms and other sex products.

For my part, I shall consider the following facts as enough to eliminate me from consideration: I am 64....I had a vasectomy 30 years ago!....I am married and monogamous....I am not willing to travel to Australia for the "try-outs"....

Guess that makes my decision pretty final!

On The Verge of A Surge Success!

From Michael Yon....who IS in Iraq & with our troops!

"The big news on the streets today is that the people of Baqubah are generally ecstatic, although many hold in reserve a serious concern that we will abandon them again. For many Iraqis, we have morphed from being invaders to occupiers to members of a tribe. I call it the “al Ameriki tribe,” or “tribe America.”

I’ve seen this kind of progression in Mosul, out in Anbar and other places, and when I ask our military leaders if they have sensed any shift, many have said, yes, they too sense that Iraqis view us differently. In the context of sectarian and tribal strife, we are the tribe that people can—more or less and with giant caveats—rely on.

Most Iraqis I talk with acknowledge that if it was ever about the oil, it’s not now. Not mostly anyway. It clearly would have been cheaper just to buy the oil or invade somewhere easier that has more. Similarly, most Iraqis seem now to realize that we really don’t want to stay here, and that many of us can’t wait to get back home. They realize that we are not resolved to stay, but are impatient but to drive down to Kuwait and sail away. And when they consider the Americans who actually deal with Iraqis every day, the Iraqis can no longer deny that we really do want them to succeed. But we want them to succeed without us. We want to see their streets are clean and safe, their grass is green, and their birds are singing. We want to see that on television. Not in person. We don’t want to be here. We tell them that every day. It finally has settled in that we are telling the truth.

Now that all those realizations and more have settled in, the dynamics here are changing in palpable ways"

The quote is part of a posting by Dean Barnett over at Hugh Hewitt's blog on the success of the surge. It is a really good GO-READ-LEARN cause you won't hear the entire story from the media....only the negatives. How sad the MSM chooses to be so very, very biased.
