POLICE have seized a high-performance ute and charged the 19-year-old driver with reckless driving after he was clocked doing 180km/h on Mitchell Freeway
The teenage driver was just two months off p-plates.
At about 11pm last night, Traffic Enforcement Police were conducting a Laser Speed detection action on Mitchell Freeway in Warwick.
A Black Holden Commodore V8 SS utility was clocked by laser at 180km/h.
Police chased the ute, stopping it near Erindale Rd and interviewed the 19-year-old driver, from Kardinya.
His explanation when questioned by police for the alleged high speed was: “I didn’t realise I was going that fast.”
He had come off his p-plates in February 2008.
Police have seized the offender’s motor vehicle for 48hrs. He was summonsed to appear in court on a reckless driving charge.
'No licence, 203km/h and talking on a mobile'
A PERTH man without a driver's licence has been clocked speeding at 203 km/h while talking on his mobile phone - and he had allegedly been drinking alcohol.
It is alleged he was driving at more than 100km/h over the highway's 100km/h speed limit.
Police spokeswoman Dianne Simpson said traffic enforcement officers clocked the man doing 203km/h at 12.45am today on Roe Highway, Leeming.
"The Holden SS ute was travelling at 203 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Roe Highway,'' Sergeant Simpson said.
"The driver admitted he had been talking on his mobile phone.''
The man then underwent a breath test.
The 33-year-old man from Carlisle has been charged with being over the 0.05 per cent blood alcohol limit, reckless driving and driving without a driver's licence.
He is due to appear in the Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
His ute has been impounded for 48 hours under WA hoon legislation.
