Coach Beerman Talks About the Schedule

June 21, 2007

PITTSBURGH--Pitt Volleyball Head CoachChris Beerman today released the 2007 schedule, which includes 12 NCAA participants from last season. The Panthers return five starters and a libero and enter the season as the No. 12 most winningest volleyball program.

The Panthers return from a 22-9 season, posting their 32nd winning season in 33 years of competition. Pitt will host 12 of their 31 regular-season contests at the Fitzgerald Field House, including the annual Pitt Invitational on Sept. 7th and 8th where it faces George Mason, Alabama-Birmingham, and Buffalo.

As stated earlier, Pitt faces 12 NCAA Tournament qualifiers from 2006. The Panther's toughest match from the list is national semifinalist UCLA during the San Diego Tournament on Sat., Sept. 15.

The other eleven tournament opponents are Pepperdine (Aug. 24 at Arkansas Invitational, Fayetteville, Ark.), Arkansas (Aug. 25 at Arkansas Invitational), Michigan (Sept. 1 at Miami Tournament, Miami, Ohio), UAB (Sept. 7 at Miami Tournament), San Diego (Sept. 14 at USD Tournament, San Diego Calif.), Notre Dame (Sept. 22 at Fitzgerald Field House), St. John's (Sept. 29 at Carnesecca Arena, Queens, N.Y.), Louisville (Nov. 4 at Cardinal Arena, Louisville Ky.), St. Louis (Nov. 9 at Fitzgerald Field House), Long Beach State (Nov. 23 at Long Beach Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.), and UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 24 at Long Beach Tournament, Long Beach, Calif.).

"The Pitt Panther volleyball program's yearly mission is to compete for the Big East Championship and perform at a high level in the NCAA Tournament," Beerman said. "I believe this schedule prepares us exceptionally well for both goals. To be the best, you have to play the best and our veteran team is excited about the challenge of the 2007 schedule."

The 2007 season begins at the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., on Fri., Aug. 24. The Panthers will take on Pepperdine and Georgia Tech on the first day of the tournament, and will play the host Razorbacks of Arkansas the following day. The Panthers' home opener will be Friday, Sept. 7, versus George Mason at 1 p.m., while Big East action opens on Sat., Sept. 22 at home against Notre Dame at 2 p.m.

Also this year, Pitt Volleyball will receive unprecented media coverage as PantherVision Productions has scheduled to stream four regular season matches live on Panthers All-Access. The tenative matches for streaming are UAB, DePaul, Villanova and Syracuse.
