The anesthesiologist who worked on Stephanie Kuleba, 18, before she died early Saturday has been identified as Dr. Peter Warheit, according to the Kulebas' attorney.
Kuleba is thought to have died from malignant hyperthermia, a hereditary condition triggered by certain inhaled anesthetics. An autopsy is pending. Warheit's name had not been released until today, when family attorney Roberto Stanziale received the popular teen's medical records.
She was Dr. Steven Schuster's office Friday for corrective breast surgery when an hour and 45 minutes into the procedure the doctors began to treat her for the life-threatening condition. Kuleba, the cheerleading captain at West Boca Raton High School, died at Delray Medical Center less than 24 hours later.
Warheit could not be reached immediately by phone. A receptionist at his office in Delray Beach said he was off.
