Community Partnership

Syracuse University ~ Good Samaritan Foundation Community Partnership

Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF) was founded in 1993 by former NFL superstars Art Monk (SU ‘80), Charles Mann, Earnest Byner, and Tim Johnson. Reflecting the commitment to service of its founders, the Good Samaritan Foundation is an all-out effort to reach and teach District of Columbia teens. GSF is a private, non-profit, 501(c)3 organization.

Good Samaritan Foundation’s mission statement: To prepare youth for leadership in the community and the workplace.

GSF’s Student Training Opportunity Program (STOP) is a year-round youth development program currently providing after-school tutoring, leadership development, workplace readiness training, and community service opportunities for 35 high school students in Southeast Washington, DC and 22 STOP alumni currently enrolled in college or in the workforce.

For answers to frequently-asked questions, detailed information on STOP, or other programs offered by GSF, please visit the Good Samaritan Foundation’s website at http://www.gsf-dc.org/.

Syracuse University has formed a community partnership with the Good Samaritan Foundation. Through this partnership, SU is providing university and alumni resources to assist GSF in preparing youth for leadership in the community and the workplace.SU-GSF Community Partnership activities include a wide range of support by alumni and friends, including:

  • Participation in the SU-GSF Community Partnership Advisory Council

  • After-school tutoring

  • Chaperoning GSF field trips, including the spring break college tour

  • Sponsorship of GSF student participation in SU events that provide opportunities for career exploration

  • Summer internships for GSF students and program graduates

  • Donation of nutritious snacks, school and office supplies (drop off at Greenberg House any time)

  • Cash donations to support field trips and purchase of Metro cards

  • Career exploration presentations and business tours by alumni and friends.  For example, Don McPherson, Executive Director of the Sports Leadership Institute (SLI) at Adelphi University, was a speaker in the Good Samaritan Foundation’s Friday Forum series for students this summer. SLI was created to provide comprehensive, proactive, and innovative approaches to addressing social issues through sport while working to change the climate of sport to a positive, educational, and fun experience for all participants. Don was an All-America quarterback at Syracuse University and led the football team to an undefeated season in 1987-1988, when he also came in 2nd place in the Heisman Trophy voting. His SU career was followed by a professional career in the NFL and CFL.
