Forget for a minute that you've heard anything about STRAPPING YOUNG LAD cranking out this album under deadline in order to appear on Ozzfest. Forget also the hand-wringing angst about statements from mainman Devin Townsend that this could be the final SYL opus. Concentrate, for a moment, on the actual eleven songs in front of you. Does "The New Black" match up to the awesome legacy of this band, especially its 1997 milestone "City"?

At times, yes. There are some flat-out amazing moments here, where Townsend is singing in that multitracked demon's choir voice, Gene Hoglan is doing inhuman things to his drums, and walls of guitar are cascading in an impossibly heavy wall of rushing soundwaves. However, there's also the occasional misstep — the corny, vapid-on-purpose "Fucker" and the directionless, brooding title track being two low points.

The industrialized thrash sound that STRAPPING pioneered on "City" is arguably the most influential thing to hit extreme metal in the last decade (just listen to the production choices on most of your favorite Swedish bands' recent albums). So is it a sign of creative burnout on Townsend's part that the most “typical" SYL song here is the throwaway joke "U Suck"? Ridiculous as the song is, it's hard not to crack a smile as Townsend blares "tell me how much you fuckin' suck!" and a raging choir of hooligans bellow "hell yeah, we fuckin' suck!" (Fuck anything DISTURBED has to offer, that is gonna be the feel-good audience chant of the summer at Ozzfest!)

But if you're looking for prime STRAPPING YOUNG LAD at their most manic and hypercharged, look no further than "Wrong Side". "Monument" is an insistent, martial stomper where Townsend alternates between his scream and a soaring melody, before putting the two together in one of the band's best choruses to date. And how about "Almost Again", an exploration of the band's proggier side, with a forlorn and heartfelt vocal that crashes headlong into blast beats and swelling apocalyptic keyboards?

The point is, there are a few duds on this album, which is a surprising and rare thing coming from such a consistently awesome band. Maybe they rushed this record, and maybe Devin needs a few months off to take a long nap and have some soup. But it can't be denied that even sub-par STRAPPING YOUNG LAD material mops the damn floor with almost everything else out there. And most of this album can take its place right alongside the band's best work.

"The New Black" is one of those albums where the good moments are so good, they more than make up for the weak spots. It's debatable whether this material will resonate with anyone not already hip to the band's warped sense of humor and frenetic musical spazz attack. But who cares? I'm willing to skip the clinkers and give thanks for "Decimator", "Monument", "Wrong Side", the wicked "Far Beyond Metal" (featuring Oderus Urungus of GWAR) and yes, even "U Suck". All hail the (not so) new flesh!

i got into SYL in 96, and 'city' blew me away But over time, Devy pissed me off; his solo shit is MAD repetitive(same goddamn chord progressions and melodic ideas) and the post-'City' SYL albums have not really impressed me.

am i missing something here? how many times do i need to listen to them? 'alien' was better than the self-titled i'll admit, but it still didn't grab me.

maybe i'm just over him completely.

i actually agree with this review pretty much completely, although I think the title track is good. The main problem is the lack of anger and that it feels rushed, Devin should wait until he's insane/pissed off and has 6 months to write the record before doing a SYL album, like he did for Alien.

Devin Townshend still gets more pussy than all of you on here...and he puts out better records than any of you too...so pipe down!

I've had this album via online for a month now from a friend, and it does take several listens if you're a long time fan. It seems more humour based (esp You Suck). But that's part of it's appeal too. It isn't a million miles an hour the whole time or dense as fuck industrial noises for periodic escapes.

It's no City or Alien (which i think is superior to City). But better than "the chicken feather" LP lmao that was awesome whomever posted that. This is kind of a full circle record, reminds me of Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing in some ways...if they break up now, i'd consider it on top their game. If not, let's hope the next one is to Alien, as what Alien was to City (ie totally demolishes it)...

This is definitely pretty close to the middle ground between SYL and Devin's solo stuff to me. I've been playing tracks off this album on my radio show for about a month now and the review seems pretty spot on. It lacks the rage of previous SYL releases. Alien (which I put as a tie with City) was absolutely brutal and out of control. Walls of sounds, voices, and noise. The Alien mix was absolutely perfect, especially on Skeksis. I'd consider this album as a cleaner of version of Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing.

Oh, and Anti-product kicks ass. But I'm a metal fan that digs the funk, so it brought the best of both worlds together for me.

Ok so here's a lil info you need to know about me before I give my review. I had never heard ANYTHING by SYL, but my friend tooke me to the Fear Factory/SYL concert on Halloween last year here in Minnesota. I was soooooooooo impressed, and usually that type of music is not my style. But that shit was amazing. After the show I got to meet Gene, its amazing what that man can do.

So we went to the Mall of America today and he(same friend) got the cd for $9.99. Hell of a deal. we poped it in and OMG my jaw was on the floor. We didn't get through the whole cd. The last song I heard was w/ Bif Naked. So for this being the only cd I've heard by them I think its a great cd and I will defintely be pickingit up. Devin is a musical genius, plain and simple. Whoever said about skipping the comment about skipping the first song is a dumbass, the first like 5seconds of the cd w/ the drums is phenominal.

For what I heard of the cd I am impressed and can't wait to see the band this upcomming Friday here in MN @Star Central.

..with this album, I heard all the stories about how they were cranking this out to have it released by Ozzfest. Then I heard "U Suck", which was kind of repetitive, but still kicked major fuckin' ass. I gotta say, though, as much as I LOVED "Alien" and used "Shitstorm" as the soundtrack of my life that year, this new one falls short.

I have the Devin Townsend Band's "Synchestra," so I understand both sides of Devin's musical spectrum: I go to SYL when I want my ass kicked, and to the DTB when I want more epic stuff. "The New Black" sounds like it has some elements from DTB that he didn't use. Plus I agree with Keith; "Fucker" IS pretty cheesy. Doesn't matter if it's on purpose or not.

About half of this album rips my face off better than most of the shit coming out this year. But the other half is why I'm glad I decided to download it before I bought it. SYL can do much better than this. Devin just needs to get pissed off again. Kind of hard to be mad and "metal" at the world when you just had a new baby.

"Even your Girlfriend Fucking Sucks"
"Hell Yeah she Fucking Sucks!"

classic.....

Its nice to see a Heavy Metal band that has a sense of humor.
They genuinly dont care what people think.

There are too many Metal bands out there that try sooooo hard to keep the "Hardcore" image that it doesnt even look like they are having any fun.
And after all, isnt that what being in a band is all about? having a blast with your pals?

"WE'RE STRAPPING YOUNG LAD..........AND YOUR NOT!!!!!!!!!!"

Before i write anything here i want to make the point that this post is in no way directed at anyone connected with blabbermouth.net. Also i havn't heard this record yet as it isn't out until the 17th here in the UK.

Seems to me there are a lot of people on here that are biased towards their favourite 'style' or 'category' of metal, for example, metalcore or grindcore (whatever they are). Wheres the point in categorizing the best form of music on the planet? If you like the band just buy their album, who cares about the style or category? Why argue anonymously on these online forums which is better? They are all metal, preaching the same gospel lol. To me Killswitch Engage(for example) are in every way as good as SYL.

As a number of people have stated, devin's SYL albums have become less angry and violent and lacking the previous rage of his other albums. Don't forget the man is married, starting a family and rolling in cash. Whats to be angry about? lol.

So far 2006 has been quite poor for metal, Tool's 10,000 Days being the only exception so far. Looking forward to getting 'The New Black' and also Slayer's new record will be immense.

Cheers!
Steve from Northern Ireland

just got it yesterday and after a few lessons i'd have to say that this is probably my favorite SYL album. it's the best thing they've put out since City. i like it better than Alien. Alien just didn't do it for me.

Never review an album with a butt plug inserted!

Just kidding, I think this album kicks ass. But I think there are MORE high points than low points. If you get the chance get the double cd version!!! Why the fuck does a band have to make every album comperable to their greatest in their past. Geez give it a rest. The album has new directions, but you FUCKING KNOW this band kicks 90% of the bands out there in the fucking balls.

The lad fucking OWNS. Devin does indeed create gold with Jed, Byron, Gene and even wille!!! Im glad they dont have to regurgitate themselves. If you want City So fucking bad, just put it on. Let them explore!!

I intend to get the domestic and import versions on CD.

Another Great Album from One of the finest HEAVY METAL genius ever.
THE NEW BLACK just purge all the shit away with it's melodies (reminiscence of power metal and Devin solo stuff, too) , and the heavier-pummeling guitar parts. . .

I think that now all has been said and done, and even if Devin decides to quit w/SYL, it will remains a lot of great music from the canadian artist.

Personally, TNB is the ultimate, last face of this multi-faced metal band. Here, beside heaviness and crazy stuff (you suck, ehm), there is a more oculated guitar wise section, with tones of harmonies and ripping ass solos by Uncle Dev and Jed.
Just has happened with the mighty WE RIDE, here it continues with a more classic-metal oriented style.

IMMORTAL, SYL IS an IMMORTAL band. Nothin' to add.

Get over comparing everything Strapping Young Lad does to City. For fuck sake, the band has changed immensely.

SYL have evolved, and listening to their albums seperately for an extended period of time allows to understand properly what the band meant by the album. The New Black is another change in their path, but it still operates on one of their continually guiding principles, to make metal with the "wall of sound" effect, the songs break down as you listen to them and you appreciate each part, Hoglans insane drumming, the tremolo picking and "demonic wailing" of Dev. All of their music is different, listen to the orchestral breakdown in "Antiproduct" then listen to the backing synth of "All hail the new flesh" Both songs are metal, but move well beyond convention. They do so differently is all. Just give this album a chance and it grows on you.

COME TO AUSTRALIA!!! 10/10

The New Black a low of the album, I think not, I really like that song, the transistion between almost again and the new black is fucking awesome!!

If Devin Townsend took a shit and pissed on it, then sold replicas off for £100, i'd probably still buy it, thats how much of a true musical genius this guy is!

This is another great contribution to the metal genre, a shame to think this may be there last, but I guess the old saying quit while your ahead is quite true!!

Great album but we're far from the madness and sheer brutality ruling other releases.

The production is less accomplished (sounds almost "natural" which is something surprising for that band).

Anyway, even not at the top of his game (some fillers here or there) SYL remains more creative, brutal and fucking METAL than most of the shit roaming out there.

SYL motherfuckers !!!
