Turn left along a stretch of the Pan-American Highway at Pinsaquí in Ecuador's Northern Sierra, and immediately you are transported far from the thundering trucks and fume-belching buses into tranquillity. A driveway leads between whitewashed gateposts into the manicured grounds of Hacienda Pinsaquí, framed by bright bougainvillea and home to a pair of peacocks.

Independent Families: 'Is Costa Rica suitable for a family holiday?'
Published: 10 November 2007
Q. Fifteen years ago, we went backpacking through Central America, and loved Costa Rica. We'd like to return there with our six- and nine-year-old girls, but – since we weren't focused on child-friendliness when we were last there – we're not sure how suitable it would be. Hotel of the week: The Jalousie Plantation, St Lucia, West Indies
Published: 21 October 2007
St Lucia is a spectacularly beautiful island and the Jalousie Plantation dominates its prime location. Constructed in 192 acres of rainforest, the hotel cascades down the mountainside between the Pitons, the lava spikes for which the island is famous. Its owner, Colin Tennant, aka Lord Glenconner, bought Jalousie in the days when you could reach this part of the island only by canoe. He now lives next door and sometimes pops in for breakfast. The resort has the usual five-star facilities – a spa, gym, watersports, kids' club etc – but at heart it is a quiet place for the well-heeled to relax.
