Human Resource Services

Serving the You in BYU

Service Award Program

A Human Resource Services staff member will prepare annually a list of eligible full-time personnel, who have reached a five-year service* increment, for each campus division/area. Each list will be sent to the respective dean, director or department head for verification. Each individual service award recipient will then be contacted and provided with a list of gift options. After the recipient makes a choice, the gift will be ordered. Gifts and certificates will be delivered to each division/area prior to the employee’s anniversary month.

In order for a service award gift to be non-taxable, it must be presented to the recipient in a public and meaningful way. The dean, director, department chair, or manager should present the award at an appropriate department function, e.g. department retreat, meeting or annual event. Gifts and certificates should not be awarded prior to the employee’s anniversary month.

* Service is the length of time an individual has been a full-time employee with BYU beginning with the original hire date. Temporary or special employment or service with other units of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will not count under this program. Any approved leave of absence is not an interruption and continues to count toward years of service. A person who terminates full-time employment and returns to a full-time position will be able to combine the periods of employment for a service award as outlined in the Months of Service Policy.
