Employee Relations provides counsel and direction to management and personnel in the process of resolving conflicts, problems, complaints and grievances; monitors, interprets and applies laws, trends, practices and procedures; and administers the unemployment compensation program.
Employee Consultation
- Mediate employee/employer issues in a confidential and timely manner.
- Assist personnel in an advocacy role when needed and appropriate.
- Assist University personnel in understanding BYU policies and state and Federal laws related to employment.
Management Consultation
Contact should be made with the office of Employee Relations for any of the following reasons:
- Possible termination of an employee (full-time, part-time, on-call, temp, etc.)
- Conflict resolution
- Problem resolution
- Counseling
- Employment-related questions
Unemployment
- Employee Relations is responsible for processing all unemployment claims for the University.
- Departments should send all claims and/or direct all questions regarding unemployment to Employee Relations (scott_elkins@byu.edu).
- The manager of Employee Relations is also responsible for the following:
- Unemployment compensation reports, appeals and hearing processes for the University.
- Representing the University at unemployment court hearings.
- The Office of Employee Relations coordinates job-related decisions involving Workers' Compensation and/or disability processes (scott_elkins@byu.edu)
Training
Conducts training seminars on the following:
- Developing Positive Employee Relations
- Documenting Discipline
- Family Medical Leave Act
- How to Deal with Difficult Employees
- Exit Interviews
The Office of Employee Relations provides employees who are terminating their employment an opportunity to participate in a confidential exit interview, which allows for candid evaluations of their work environments and experiences at BYU.
