Student Non-Discrimination Procedures - Students

1 June 2006

Students are entitled to study in an environment free from unlawful discrimination. Any faculty member, administrative, staff or student employee or student who unlawfully discriminates against a student on the basis of race, color, gender, national origin, religion, age, veteran status, or disability may be subject to sanction. Students who engage in discriminatory behavior may also be in violation of the Church Educational System Honor Code whether the behavior is on or off campus, and they may be subject to appropriate sanctions.

Students who believe they have been unlawfully discriminated against are encouraged, if practicable and if the incident is minor and isolated, to resolve the matter directly and privately with the offender. However, if in the sole discretion of the student complainant this approach is not practicable, if the incident is major and serious or if the misconduct is part of a continuing pattern, the student complainant is encouraged to report the incident directly to the Equal Opportunity Manager, D-282 ASB, 422-5895 or 367-5689 (24-hour contact line) or the Honor Code Office, 4440 WSC, 422-2847. The Equal Opportunity Manager will conduct an investigation and issue a report of findings with recommendations for corrective action, if needed, to the appropriate administrator and grievant.

If the alleged perpetrator is a university employee or third party such as a vendor or visitor, the Equal Opportunity Manager will investigate and resolve the complaint pursuant to university policy. The complaint may be resolved either through an informal or a formal grievance process with such procedures as the university deems appropriate under the circumstances. If the alleged perpetrator is a student, the matter will also be referred to the Honor Code Office and/or the Student Honor Association as appropriate to investigate and resolve the complaint and determine the status of the student at the university according to the Church Educational System Honor Code.

Students unsatisfied with the outcome may appeal the findings by following the grievance procedures outlines in the Grievance Policy-Administrative-Staff-Student.

THE UNIVERSITY RESERVES THE ABSOLUTE RIGHT TO DEVIATE FROM THESE PROCEDURES
