Frequently Asked Questions

The Application Process

Q: How do I apply for a job at BYU?

Q: Can I work for a relative or family member?
A: Colleges /departments may not employ a person or contract for services with an individual in a position (including full-time and part-time personnel (or special employees), faculty, administrative, staff, temporary, on-call, including students) within the administrative scope or control of a near relative.

Persons Considered Relatives or Near Relatives Include:
Parent Aunt Niece

(Step and half relationships, i.e., step-brother, step-father, half brother, half sister, etc., are also considered near relatives for purposes of this policy).

Q: To whom should I address my cover letter?
A: Address the letter to "Selection Committee" or "Hiring Manager," instead of a specific individual.

Q: Are letters of recommendation and resumés necessary?
A: Letters of recommendation and résumés, as with all attachments on YJobs, are optional.

A: Yes. All applications are submitted online at http://yjobs.byu.edu.

Q: I've successfully applied for a position. How soon will I be contacted by BYU?
A: You can check your job status at http://yjobs.byu.edu after you have applied for a position. The review process takes approximately two weeks.

A: No. However, all employees are required to agree to maintain LDS standards as defined by the Honor Code and the Dress and Grooming Standards.

Q: If I am not LDS, do I have to fill out the "Current Bishop/Clergy" section on the application?
A: No. If you are offered a position, you will have an interview with an Employment Services administrator.

Q: What if I just moved and do not know my new bishop yet?
A: You may use the name and phone number of your former bishop; however, please update your new information as soon as possible.

Q: Do LDS employees need to hold a current temple recommend to work for BYU?
A: No, but LDS employees need to be temple worthy.

Q: Do I need to contact my bishop for an interview in order to apply?
A: No. The employment office will contact your bishop only when you become a final candidate for a position.

Q: What is the Office Skills Test and how long is it?
A: The OST consists of four tests: one 5-minute typing exercise, one 5-minute data entry exercise (both tests have optional warm-up test available), and two untimed filing tests (one numeric and one alphabetic). Testing usually requires approximately 30-45 minutes.

Q: Where can I take the OST and do I need an appointment?
A: The OST is administered at the Employment Services Office at D-70 ASB Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm (the office is closed Tuesdays from 10:45am to noon for University Devotionals and Forums). No appointment is necessary.
