David Hicks safe house found as he celebrates new year in Adelaide

Article from: The Advertiser

January 02, 2008 01:20pm

DAVID Hicks's "safe house" has been discovered as he celebrated the new year. It is believed he watched New Year's Eve fireworks in a quiet street.

It is believed Hicks, who is being shielded from public scrutiny, watched New Year's Eve fireworks from outside the street where he has support from some sympathetic neighbours.

Hicks is believed to have today left the house for a new address.

Just after midnight yesterday, The Advertiser in Adelaide visited the house where the confessed terrorism supporter is staying and saw a man believed to be Hicks, in the company of three minders, watching the display.

An Advertiser journalist heard, between the sounds of fireworks blasts, the minder call to the man: "David, come and have a look . . . have a look at this."

Property searches indicate the property is owned by an associate of the Hicks family.

One of the minders crossed the road from the house, looked at a nearby midnight fireworks display and then shouted to a man believed to be Hicks to also take a look.

The short and stocky man believed to be Hicks emerged from the house with two other men and crossed the road to watch the display.

Later, a man inside the house possibly Hicks himself denied Hicks was at the property.

"David who?" he asked from behind a closed door.

"There's no David here. You must have the wrong address."

Hicks is under a control order and must report to a police station three times a week and obey a curfew from midnight to 6am. His phone calls and emails are monitored by the Australian Federal Police.

Hicks is not allowed to speak about his experiences until a gag order on him expires in March but he was yesterday reported as saying he was "doing fine".

Supporters had earlier indicated that he would be moved through a succession of safe houses to shield him from media attention.

Several neighbours said they were supportive of 32-year-old Hicks and his right to a normal life.

One neighbour said he wanted to invite him over for a barbecue.

Other residents, who did not want to be named, said they were happy to have Hicks in the area.

"It doesn't worry me at all," said one.

"We don't know really what he did. I'm happy to have him in my neighbourhood. I don't have a problem with (him) at all," said another.

One neighbour said he was "stunned" to learn he was living near Hicks, who was released from Yatala prison on Saturday.

"I had no idea," he said.

"I did notice a David Hicks sticker on a car that was parked in the street.

"We were only talking about (Hicks' release) last night."

The neighbour said he was a "bit uncomfortable" to be so near the former Guantanamo Bay detainee who described Osama bin Laden as "lovely".

This truly is journalism of the worst kind. Sneaking around telling tales like those seedy London papers. The man's been convicted of NOTHING! If not liking the Bush administration is a crime then you'd better slap an order on me too.

I can't wait for further updates: Hicks has toast for breakfast. Hicks goes to toilet. Hicks pats a dog. Hicks scratches his nose.

For gododness sake leave David Hicks alone, he doesn't need the press hounding him just let him get on with his life and fit back into society.

John Saxon. That's the problem with you right wing lunatics. Never know when to stop, do you? The head prosecutor for the U.S. only days ago told us he resigned because the whole affair was political. Hicks may or may not be guilty but certainly not something you would know for sure. Hicks served six years and most likely tortured. Why? Because Downer, Ruddock, Howard and the Blob saw political advantages in keeping him locked up. Also mate, if I remember correctly, Howard expedited his return because the majority of us wanted him home. Did you forget? We are still a democracy.
