Checking in with Trettel

Thursday Trettel told me he came with 100 long boxes full of comics that he had no intention of bringing back to the First State.

The first day of wheeling and dealing is over as of 6 p.m. and Trettel tells me its a good thing there's two more.

"[I am] not that much closer," Trettel said.

Only 6 boxes are gone and there's two days left.

But Saturday should be better Trettel said.

"[On] Friday people still have to work or do things like that," he said. "Saturday, people don't have to work or have time to drive kids out."

Spider-man was taking a break from saving crime to explore the convention.

Vincent Tyson, a 43-years-old West Philadelphian native bought passes for all three days. He said he has two Spider-man costumes to alternate between today until Sunday.

"True comic fans dresses up," Tyson said.

He said he likes getting dressed up for comic events because he likes the attention. He said he always receive positive feedback from the public at comic conventions.

Brian Bendis and friends

Bendis, Michael Avon Oeming, and David Mack held an open forum where they took questions from the audience and the internet.

Here Michael describes how they met.

if you are a true fanatic of comics, you will do whatever it takes to get you through the doors, even if it means volunteering for a couple hours John Butler, a student from Benjamin Franklin High school in Philadelphia.

Volunteering saved over 40 volunteers today $25, which they can probably use towards comic books and paraphernalia that were sold by different vendors today.

Rayya Brown, one of the volunteers, said that the atmosphere is pretty relaxed. She said they are able to pick the days and hours that they want to volunteer and enter the Wizard World convention free of charge.

Looks like Team Rocket is blasting off again

If you have any young relatives you may have seen Pokemon's Team Rocket before. Both Jesse (right) and James try to foil the plans of Ash, the main character (you know, the one with Pikachu).

James Craven, 46 of Philadelphia volunteered to help out at Wizard World but decided to forgo the typical uniform for something a little more cartoonish.

"They are the most inept bad guys in the universe," said Craven dressed as Jesse on a dare from his 13 year old nephew.

As for the costume, he got some funny looks while riding the Market-Frankford Line to the convention center. But if he can recapture the feeling a Saturday Morning cartoon delivers, that's just fine with him.

"Saturday mornings are gone, we're being forced this (educational) crap," he said of the current state of cartoons.

Wheeling and Dealin

We caught up with Tom Trettel of The Comic Book Shop earlier today. Here's what it looked like minutes before the convention opened.

Here he is not too long ago. We'll check in with him in a bit to find out how many boxes he may have left.
