Des Moines Veteran's Administration Eye ClinicThe University of Iowa Ophthalmology residents spend two months at the
VA in Des Moines during the last six months of their training. The rotation
in Des Moines offers a challenging clinical and surgical experience under
the direction of Dr. Constance Grignon.
On the clinical side, a large number of patients, some with complex problems, are seen at the VA Eye Clinic, and also at Broadlawns Hospital and Woodward State Hospital. A retina subspecialty clinic is held once a month at the Des Moines VA It is staffed alternately by three fine retina specialists from the community, Dr. Chris Blodi, Dr. Todd Heilskov, and Dr. Chris Haupert. On the surgical side, a significant volume of cataract surgery using the latest equipment and technique can be expected. A local ophthalmologist with a special interest in plastics is available to staff ophthalmic plastic cases. The adjunct ophthalmologists staffing the OR are Drs. David Dwyer, Elizabeth Brown, Valerie Kounkel, Linda Lehman and Jean Spencer.
The VA in Des Moines enjoys excellent rapport with the University of Iowa Ophthalmology Department and can depend on their expertise whenever necessary. The rotation fosters autonomy and personal growth in a friendly atmosphere and is well-liked by the ophthalmology residents.
