Welcome
The University of Iowa Center for Macular Degeneration is dedicated to research and treatment of macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa and related degenerative diseases of the eye. Treatment for these conditions may include medical, surgical and/or vision rehabilitation.
- Project 3000 Chicago Cubs star Derrek Lee and Boston Celtics lead owner Wyc Grousbeck have decided to combine their talents to eradicate a disease that has touched both of their families, Lebers Congenital Amaurosis or LCA.
- AMD Gene Discovery Researchers in the Center for Macular Degeneration have made an important new discovery that advances our understanding of the causes of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
- Macular degeneration is a degenerative disease of the retina that causes progressive loss of central vision. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries and affects one in three people over the age of 85.
- Glaucoma is a group of diseases characterized by optic nerve injury with resultant visual loss. Glaucoma is prevalent in all populations and can lead to blindness, if not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner. Glaucoma is more common in older individuals and in certain ethnic groups.
- Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited disorders of the retina, characterized by a loss of photoreceptor cells. In many individuals, the loss of photoreceptor cells impairs the individual's ability to see in dim light and also decreases their peripheral vision.
- Vision rehabilitation is the process of treatment and education that helps individuals who are visually disabled attain maximum function and optimum quality of life. Function is maximized by evaluation and treatment including, but not limited to, the prescription of optical, non-optical and/or video magnification devices. Instruction in the use of the prescribed devices as well as compensatory strategies is part of the individualized rehabilitation plan.
