50 Years of Support and 50 Great References from Merriam-Webster

To commemorate this year's 50th anniversary of Merriam-Webster's partnership with the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the school or public library of the 2007 champion's choice will receive a collection of 50 Merriam-Webster titles and a check for $5,000. This gift, made in the winner's name, exemplifies Merriam-Webster's long-standing commitment to the support of education and literacy.

We also invited the 286 regional Bee finalists to participate in Merriam-Webster's Winning Words Scavenger Hunt, a contest based on words that have won the national competition for spellers since 1957—the year Merriam-Webster first came on board. All participants who correctly identified each of the twenty winning words in this quiz were awarded a copy of the new Merriam-Webster's Visual Dictionary, and one randomly-drawn winner received the grand prize—an Apple 30GB iPod.
