Aug. 3, 2000 DELAWARE,
OHIO -- There is something formal yet festive about building dedications.
And when a building honors a loved one while also enriching life and learning
on a college campus, there is even more cause for celebration. The R.W. Corns Building, previously known on the OWU campus as the Memorial
Union Building (MUB), will be dedicated on Tuesday, Aug. 8, as Ohio
Wesleyan staff, alumni and friends gather to celebrate on campus. The
building, centrally located at the corner of Sandusky Street and Rowland
Avenue, is named in memory of the father of OWU Trustee Evan Corns '59.
Richard Corns, a native of Cleveland, Ohio and long-time resident of Akron,
Ohio served as president and vice chairman of Akron-based Rodeway Express
in the late 1950s and 1960s. The MUB, which served as the Student Union at Ohio Wesleyan for 40 years,
was originally dedicated in memory of OWU alumni who gave their lives
while serving their country. With the completion of the Hamilton-Williams
Campus Center in 1991, all functions of the MUB and more, moved to that
facility, leaving the MUB vacant for several years -- until Evan Corns
offered an extraordinary vision and gift to honor both his father and
his alma mater. The R.W. Corns Building will now provide first-rate facilities housing
the Economics Department; the Woltemade Center for Economics, Business
and Entrepreneurship; the Academic Resource Center; and the Information
Systems functions. "Evan's generosity honors both his family and college in one of the
most lasting and public ways possible," says OWU President Tom Courtice.
"He has given new life to a building that will touch the lives of
our world's future business leaders and citizens." Many OWU alumni and friends also have contributed monetary gifts to the
R.W. Corns Building -- contributions that have once again brought this
building to life for the OWU community. Get directions to R.W. Corns Building, download an OWU campus map (in PDF format), or find out more information about visiting Ohio Wesleyan. Back to the main News Archives page Recent News Releases | Sports
