Virus Protection/Desktop Security

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Virus protection is required on any computer using a wired or wireless connection to the BYU campus network. Every computer, whether or not it has a virus, needs to complete the protection procedure found at the link in the left side bar.

What does this product do?

This product offers solutions to help protect the BYU network and the desktop environment from being infected.

What are the features?

The Office of IT continues to establish procedures in an effort to prevent and stop the spread of viruses, worms, etc. However, to be successful requires the cooperation of every campus user since infection can be spread through many different sources, including floppy disks, email attachments, Internet downloads, and browsing.

To help protect against infections, two important procedures every user should incorporate are: 1) Keep the PC's operating system up-to-date and 2) Keep the PC's virus protection software up-to-date.

The campus community should also be watchful for bogus virus warnings, hoaxes, chain letters, rumors, etc. It is recommended that the user verify the validity of these types of messages before taking any action such as opening or forwarding a message. Their validity and potential consequences can be assessed at reputable sites such as http://symantec.com/ or http://vil.mcafee.com/hoax.asp

How do I obtain this product?

Keeping your operating system current will help protect against infections. Windows Updates (available from Microsoft) should be applied to all computers using a Microsoft Windows operating system. Windows may be configured to detect/install updates automatically (see instructions in the left sidebar). Updates for the Windows operating system can also be obtained manually by selecting "Windows Update" at http://www.microsoft.com/. Once the web page loads, click on the link 'Scan for updates' and follow the instructions to apply all updates. Those using other operating systems should contact the vendor.

Virus protection is required on every computer connecting to the BYU campus network. Symantec's AntiVirus is the standard used by BYU.

Virus protection is required on every computer connecting to the BYU campus network. Employees should contact their CSR regarding installation and to ensure that their virus software is being updated on a regular basis. If approved by their CSR, an employee may install Symantec's AntiVirus by following the instructions in the left sidebar. Students should install Symantec's AntiVirus by referring to the link(s) in the left sidebar. The software available from this site has been configured to automatically perform "LiveUpdate." Clients not connected to the Internet at the time of the update, are updated the next time they connect.

NOTE: Even though a server may have a virus protection package installed, if a user has a virus on his machine, it is still possible for that virus to store corrupted files or delete files (including other user's files) on that server. Someone who has a virus on their workstation (client) can cause harm to not only others on that server, but also to the entire campus. Servers are also vulnerable to infections and Virus protection should be installed and updated on a regular basis.
