Antivirus Software

Symantec's Norton AntiVirus software, which was previously only available to BYU faculty and staff, is now available to students at no charge. BYU recently signed a software license agreement with Symantec that allows the campus community to download the anti-virus software on their personal computers.

"This anti-virus software will help protect student and employee computers and increase security of our campus networks," said Product Manager Nyle Elison for the Office of Information Technology.

The Norton AntiVirus software is a beneficial tool that continually scans and often eliminates computer viruses, Elison said. After downloading the software, the computer user can designate scheduled scans of computer drives, folders or disks to ensure protection against viruses. Additionally, the software performs real-time scans that constantly monitor all folders and directories as users receive email, insert disks or download files from the Internet.

"Norton AntiVirus provides constant protection that is vital for security against viruses," Elison said. "The software offers students an easy way to continuously monitor their computers to detect viruses that can cause extensive damage."

If the software detects a virus, the user is alerted and Norton AntiVirus immediately tries to identify and eliminate the virus. If the virus cannot be eliminated, the specific infected file is quarantined so the virus will not spread further harm to the computer. The user can then manually delete the file.

"In rare cases when Norton AntiVirus is unable to eliminate or quarantine a virus, the user will be notified so they can find an appropriate fix," Elison said.

Once the anti-virus software has been installed it will automatically and regularly check to see if any updates are needed. Although the updates are small (and thus quickly installed) they are needed routinely because of the many new viruses that are written. Additionally, Norton's AntiVirus will automatically scan your computer for viruses once each week after connecting to the BYU network or the Internet.

In addition to installing Norton AntiVirus on personal and work computers, it is also vital to routinely update computer operating systems, Elison said. Norton AntiVirus alone cannot provide maximum computer security. For more information on protecting computers against viruses, go to http://it.byu.edu .
