12 DAYS OF THE TWELVE: DYNAMIC MAN

Over the course of twelve days, Newsarama.com will be running down the members of the enigmatic group 'The Twelve', part of the new Marvel series announced at announced at Comic-Con International by J. Michael Straczynski and Chris Weston. Each of these characters come from earlier days – pre-Marvel even – when the company was known as Atlas, and before that Timely. This new maxi-series finds these characters brought into the modern age, and artist Chris Weston was tasked with interpreting them to our times.

In this exclusive twelve-part series, we look at character designs done by artist Chris Weston along with a summation of what was in his head when he was drawing out these characters.

On the fifth day of – OK, we'll stop singing. Today's spotlight is Dynamic Man

CHRIS WESTON: I wanted Dynamic Man to look like "Station to Station"-era David Bowie, only with a big, muscular physique. I wanted to capture Bowie's weird, other-worldly looks... detached but confident. I stayed pretty faithful to his original appearances in Golden age comics, and tried to accentuate his Aryan features.

Wednesday: Elektro

The Witness

The Black Widow

The Blue Blade

Captain Wonder

The first non-crazy looking design in some time.

What does he do? Is he a speedster?

For those curious (but lazy) a few moments research shows that the Dynamic Man is an android built by a German scientist with a bad heart in a spooky castle to be the "man of tomarrow today" or some such. The scientist dies from the excitement of turning him on but Dynamic Man knows his purpose and heads off to join the FBI in his human identity and be a superhero in secret on the side.

Powers: "Super-herculean" strength and durability, really smart, able to change his appearence at will, and Magnetic manipulation (which also allows for flight).

Hmmm... Given the aera, that a german scientist built him, and the notes above mention specifically making him look aryan I wonder what that scientists actual plans for his robot involved...

So after 5 days I am totally unimpressed so I think I will be passing on this one.

I'm most interested to see how JMS develops this character.

If it is so easy to do the research, why doesn't Matt or Chris do it before they post the previews? I feel bad complaining about this for two straight days, but I really think it would quell some of the negative chatter if we were told more about these characters.

This is actually a pretty decent looking character. I would probaby change his color scheme though as he resembles Electro a little too much. Just my 2 cents.

Um... 'cos I wasn't asked to...!? My brief was to merely talk about my approach to the depiction of each character... not their backgrounds and abilities.

Sorry you feel cheated. But to be honest, you don't need to know anything about the characters. Greet them as peculiar strangers from another age... and then get to know them as the story progresses. Maybe a little mystery will improve the experience.

Why would Chris do that? Not really his job. I don't see any extra so-called negative chatter than anywhere else

I had absolutely no interest in this series when it was announced, but these character designs have me intrigued. Between the unique characters and amazing art I think I'll pick it up regardless of my distaste for the writer.

Will this quell some of your negative chatter? If so, I'll gladly sacrifice the five seconds to perform a Google search and do the same for the remaining seven characters . . . but only if it quells some of the negative chatter.

There is SO much potential with this series, particularly with this guy. The backstory provided by Newsarama posters (someone is doing the job ) on this guy and the implications are pretty interesting.

This guy has a Dr. Manhattan feel to him except (ironically ) this guy wears clothes. I got a good feeling about this series. This may be JMS' chance to finally shine. Just give him a bunch of Golden Age characters and let him recreate them in the modern world. Very little continuity, can't really mess them up.

This has a Watchmen feel to it, to be honest....

And I'm really digging these little reveals. This is how you get somebody like me to buy a comic. Consider me intrigued.

Dynamic Man aka Curt Cowan is a pretty cool character. I hope he sticks around. He's really like Timely's version of Superman. Very overpowered. That makes him different from many Marvel heroes. He'd make a good member of the Initiative given his past as an FBI agent.

Cool, this is the first guy I really know anythnig about. He had at least four costumes; the one here is the latest one. Previously, he went through at least the 'bare legs' phase that a number of Golden Age adult heroes went thought.

He gained and lost a boy sidekick, his kid brother (never explained how an android has a brother), Ricky, who became Dynamic Boy. Dynamic Boy wore a duplicate of Dynamic Man's.. um, second costume I think, and at least the second with a cape.

A sample Dynamic man story is http://www.worldoflongmire.com/oddsn...cman/dyna1.htm

Heh.

I, for one, am psyched about this series and it's all been due to these character previews. Truth is, I probably would've stayed away without them. The fact that Chris resisted the impulse to update these characters, to leave them essentially as ridiculous-looking as they were originally depicted, really bodes well for this time travel story. I mean, has there ever been a character as awkward-looking as the Blue Blade? That awkwardness was one of the things I always felt was missing from Captain America, that sense of being somewhat out of step. With these 12 yahoos we're going to get a much broader response to our culture. How will they react to racial integration? To the technology? To internet lesbians?

I like this outfit. It reminds me quite abit of Electro's costume. I wonder if Ditko was thinking of this outfit when he did that costume.

Only Weston and JMS and their editors know how these characters will be used. A reporter could do research and post it, but it could turn out to be stuff that JMS is contradicting or ignoring in the actual story.

I am interested. The art looks fantastic and I am intrigued to see how these characters will develop. JMS has been pretty hit and miss for me of late, but this looks like it has real potential.
