Hollow, 1993, forged and fabricated steel, 6'5" x 4' 1" x 3' 2", Lent by the Artist

Mark Cesark is an emerging artist who creates indoor sculptures and installations as well as outdoor work in steel. He begins by collecting bits of discarded metal which he assembles into small sculptures. According to the artist, these small works "have monumental qualities, and I begin to work with them in a more classical way, as maquettes for larger works. Placing these objects on a human scale transforms their appearance once again. Monumentalizing the objects gives them an ageless presence...and a new life, a feeling of importance. hey may resemble objects of worship, relics or ruins of a lost culture." Hollow was originally a steel tube, simply crimped on both ends along different axes. Its supporting "feet" lend the sculpture an oddly figural presence.
