'The Inside,' victim
of summer reality

Debut of Fox scripted drama trounced by 'Dancing'

   For some time, summer has been the time for reality programming. It’s not hard to figure out why. Viewers want fun and breezy. Scripted fare, especially heavy dramas, does not do well on broadcast TV. 
  Case in point: Fox’s “The Inside,” which premiered last week to poor numbers, despite receiving decent reviews.
   The show pulled 4.8 million total viewers and a 2.0 18-49 rating, placing fourth in its Wednesday 9 p.m. timeslot. By contrast, airing that same night ABC’s new reality series “Dancing with the Stars” drew 15 million viewers and a 4.8 in 18-49s.
  "Inside" finished 63rd for the week ended June 12 among total viewers and in a nine-way tie for 46th among 18-49s.

  
“Inside,” about a female agent in the FBI's violent crimes unit, may have worked on the fall schedule. It has a dark tone just like Fox’s “House” and has more attitude than many police procedurals.
  
But as a summer show it was doomed even before it was placed on the schedule.
  
Last summer Fox's scripted drama “The Jury” averaged 2.4 million total viewers in July, while “North Shore” averaged 4.5 million. “Jury” never made it to fall, while “North Shore” was canceled after a winter encore.
  
True, Fox has had scripted dramas in the past that did quite well in the summer: “Beverly Hills 90210,” “Melrose Place,” and more recently, “The O.C.” But those border on comedy, they are so soapy.
  
Fox and all the other networks are relying heavily on reality this summer, with nearly 20 shows debuting over the next few months among very few scripted series.
   But it will be interesting to see how ABC's much-touted scripted series “Empire” debuts later this month in light of  "Inside's" poor performance.

   In other broadcast ratings for the week ended June 12:

Among adults 18-49, ABC ranked No. 1 with a 2.5 rating and 8 share. Fox and CBS tied for second at 2.3/7, NBC was fourth at 2.1/7, UPN fifth at 1.1/3 and the WB sixth at 0.9/3.

Top five (18-49s): 1. ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” 4.8; 2. ABC’s NBA Finals (Sunday, Game 2) 4.5; 3. ABC’s NBA Finals (Thursday, Game 1) 4.4; 4. ABC’s “Primetime Live Special Edition” 4.2; 5. Fox’s “Family Guy” 4.1.

Top five (total viewers): 1. ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” 15.1 million; 2. CBS’s “CSI” 12.7 million; 3. CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” 11.5 million; 4. CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” 11.4 million; 5. ABC’s “Primetime Live Special Edition” 11.2 million.

Bottom five (18-49s): 111. WB’s “What I Like About You” 0.7; 112. WB’s “7th Heaven” 0.7; 113. WB’s “What I Like About You” (Friday) 0.7; 114. WB’s “One Tree Hill” 0.7; UPN’s “The Bad Girl’s Guide” 0.6

Bottom five (total viewers): 111. WB’s “What I Like About You” 1.8 million; 112. UPN’s “Kevin Hill” 1.7 million; 113. WB’s “One Tree Hill” 1.7 million; 114. WB’s “Charmed” 1.5 million; 115. UPN’s “The Bad Girl’s Guide” 1.5 million

Show on the rise: “American Dad,” Fox, Sunday 9:30 p.m. The show averaged a 3.3 rating and 4.4 million viewers in the 18-49 demo last week, landing it at No. 14 among the top shows in broadcast. And in a show of confidence, Fox has ordered up 13 additional episodes of the animated series, bringing the show’s first year total to 32 episodes.

Show on the decline: “The Bad Girl’s Guide,” UPN, Tuesday 9:30 p.m. Last week’s 0.6 18-49 rating landed the show at the bottom of broadcast program rankings. It averaged 1.47 million total viewers last week, down 19 percent from the 1.83 million it drew for its May 24 premiere episode.
