Affected Navy Family Assistance (ANFA)

Naval Station Norfolk, Va. (Sept. 18, 2003) -- Rain and heavy winds from Hurricane Isabel flood portions of Fleet Parking at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., trapping some vehicles in water up to their windows as the hurricane proceeds inland. Hurricane Isabel, which cost the Navy nearly $130 million in damage in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., made landfall as a category 2 storm near Cape Hatteras, N.C., approximately 100 miles south of Norfolk.   Navy Family Logo

The 2007 hurricane season officially starts June 1. Now is the time to make sure that you and your family have a disaster preparedness plan in place. Navy families potentially affected by hurricanes should prepare now for the upcoming season. Do you know what to do if you are under a hurricane watch or warning? Many events can trigger emergency situations that escalate into disasters. Please go to the Operation Prepare site for additional information.

Here are some basic steps to take to prepare for the storm:

  • Learn about your community's emergency plans, warning signals, evacuation routes and locations of emergency shelters.

  • Locate and secure your important papers, such as insurance policies, wills, licenses, stocks, etc.

  • Identify potential home hazards and know how to secure or protect them before the hurricane strikes. Be prepared to turn off electrical power when there is standing water, fallen power lines or before you evacuate. Turn off gas and water supplies before you evacuate.

  • Inform local authorities about any special needs; e.g., elderly or bedridden people, or anyone with a disability.
