State Library of NSW's new website rates among top designs in the world

16/09/05

Against international competition, the State Library of NSW's exciting new website www.atmitchell.com has been awarded a "standard of excellence" in the premier global competition for website design and function, it was announced today.

www.atmitchell.com is a state-of-the-art website that will give free online access to the State Library of NSW's $1.9 billion collections of largely unseen treasures relating to Australia's heritage and culture.

Following the site's March 2005 launch, creators George Patterson Partners entered www.atmitchell.com into the 2005 WebAwards, resulting in the "standard of excellence" acknowledgement in the Government category.

"In the history of the awards only one other Australian government site has been awarded, so we're absolutely thrilled with this achievement so early into atmitchell.com's life," says Dagmar Schmidmaier AM, State Librarian & Chief Executive.

"atmitchell.com will provide unparalleled access to millions of books, journals, maps, paintings, photographs, manuscripts and memorabilia from our renowned collections," says Mrs Schmidmaier.

Web users can already access many historically significant objects, including:

  • Sir Joseph Banks' Endeavour journal, 1768 – 1771
  • Some of the earliest written records of Indigenous people – blanket ration lists from the 1860s
  • Jørn Utzon's original sketches of the Sydney Opera House, 1962 – 1966
  • Rare maps documenting the emerging shape of Australia including, the original Tasman map, 1644
  • Photographs by photographer and adventurer, Frank Hurley from Endurance, Antarctica, 1915

"New objects from our collections are being added to the site on an ongoing basis, and our ultimate aim is to become one of the greatest online research libraries in the world," says Mrs Schmidmaier.
