Hundreds of immigrants rallied at Ground Zero to demand that the city and state provide free or low-cost medical treatment without requiring proof of citizenship. "They lied. They said there was no contamination in the area," Colombian immigrant Victor Nino told the Daily News. Nino, who cleaned offices and residences in the area for more than five months following 9/11, said he now has chronic asthma, headaches and skin rashes, and has no insurance to pay for treatment.

Only a few thousand people showed up in early September for immigrant marches across the country (None was planned in New York City). Advocates are questioning the staying power of the immigrant rights movement, which seemed promising in the spring when millions of immigrants took to the streets in major cities.

A new report by the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University says that in the last five years foreign-born workers made up 86 percent of the net increase in the total number of employed workers, the highest share for immigrants ever recorded in this country. By contrast, the number of employed native workers ages 16 to 34 fell by more than 1.5 million. The report contradicts the Pew Hispanic Center's study which found that the rise in immigrant workers in the country has not hurt employment prospects for native-born workers.
