Suburban Sandy is light years from the desert that welcomed Mormon pioneers when they arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. But as it turns out, the 'burbs are a hospitable place for a pioneer-style horse parade.
Last year, Days of '47 Inc., which organizes Utah's Pioneer Day events, moved the equine party to Sandy in order to avoid traffic and other urban problems. The new venue worked so well it has become the parade's permanent home, according to Brandon Brown, of the horse parade committee.
He calls the event the "largest [horse parade] in the world - that we know of."
As of early this week, the parade included 38 entries translating into a total of up to 300 horses. They'll range from miniature breeds to Belgian draft horses, from mules to wild mustangs.
The free parade is Saturday from 6-8 p.m., beginning at 10000 S. 240 West, Sandy. (More Pioneer Day events on Page E9).
