What is Athens?

 

Athens screenshot Athens is an access management system that allows you to access our online resources in the library or elsewhere.

Athens gains you access to multiple resources via a single password and username sign-in.

 

 

How do I get an Athens account?

 

Current Readers

You are eligible to apply for an Athens personal account if you hold a valid reader's ticket. To register for this service please send your name, reader's ticket number and e-mail address to llgcarlein@llgc.org.uk.

 

New Readers

When applying for a reader's ticket you should tick the appropriate box on the application form stating that you wish to be supplied with an Athens personal account, otherwise we will assume that you do not wish to have access to this service.

 

 

How do I find my Athens username and password?

 

Once your Athens account has been created, you will receive an email from Gweinyddwr Athens / Athens Administrator within 1 to 10 days containing your Athens username and password. You can change your password, and access all the resources available to you, from https://auth.athensams.net/my

 

 

What resources are available through Athens?

 

The Library currently subscribes to the following resources:

BMJ Clinical Evidence
A database of the very best evidence for effective health care, put together by the British Medical Journal - one of the world's most trusted and authoritative medical sources.

 

CSA Illumina

BHI Index
British Humanities Index indexes over 320 internationally respected humanities journals, weekly magazines and quality newspapers published in the United Kingdom and other English speaking countries.


Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS)
The Economic and Social Data Service is a national data service that provides access and support for an extensive range of key economic and social data.

Early English Books Online (EEBO)
Records and page images of early English books including Pollard and Redgrave's STC (1475-1640), Wing's STC (1641-1700) and the Thomason Tracts (1640-1661).

Encyclopaedia Britannica
Access to five encyclopaedia databases. Encyclopaedia Britannica's fully searchable text presented in an interactive format. Offering over 100,000 articles, 200,000 related web links, illustrations, maps, graphs and sounds.

Ingenta Full text Journals
Comprehensive collection of academic and professional publications. IngentaConnect is the new site that replaces Ingenta.com and IngentaSelect.

JSTOR Mirror Service
A digital archive collection of scholarly journals. An unique complete digital archive of these journals, starting with the very first issues, many of which were published as far back as the nineteenth century.

KnowUK Database
Key information about people, places and organisations in the United Kingdom. Over a 100 reference publications, and most are unique to KnowUK.

Netlibrary
A collection of E-books. The Library has puchased a choice of around 300 titles of Welsh and Celtic interest. We also have access to over 3000 more general titles. We will be adding to this choice in the future.

NewsUK Database (Chadwyck-Healey)
NewsUK is an online service developed to provide national and regional news, combining the most popular British newspaper titles in one database.

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
50,000 biographies of people who shaped the history of the United Kingdom and beyond, from the earliest times to the year 2000.

Periodicals Index Online
Electronic index to millions of articles published in the arts, humanties and social sciences over 300 years.

 

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses

Index and abstracts to theses. Mostly in English, many from American universities but also from the UK, Canada and Europe. Index from 1861 onwards. Abstracts from 1988 only. Arts and Social Sciences only.

SCRAN
SCRAN is a part of the SCRAN Trust - a registered charity, which offers educational access to digital materials, which represent our heritage and history. This resource service includes over 300,000 photographs, films and audio from museums, galleries, archives and the media.

Swetswise
Point of access to the most extensive collection of e-journals available. Over 13 million searchable references and links to full-text articles, including 90% of all available scientific, technical and medical publications.

Thomson Gale Databases

    The Times Digital Archive 1785 - 1985
    Search through the complete digital edition of The Times (London) using keyword searching and hit-term highlighting.

    Eighteenth Century Collections Online
    Based on the English Short Title catalogue, the holdings of the British Library and other Libraries worldwide. It provides full text access to 150,000 English-language titles and editions published between 1701-1800.

 

ZETOC British Library Electronic Table of Contents

Access to around 20,000 current journals and around 16,000 conference proceedings published per year. The database covers 1993 to date, and is updated on a daily basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

 

I've registered ok but now I can't log in. What's gone wrong?

 

Have you remembered that your username begins with nlw then your reader's ticket number? E.g. nlw55267

Remember that you only have access to online resources (databases or journals) that The National Library of Wales has subscribed to. You do not have access to all online resources that use Athens as an authentication system.

You must also remember that not all online resources that The National Library of Wales subscribe to use Athens as an authentication system.

 

 

What if I forget my username or password?

 

If you have forgotten you username or password, or have a problem with your account, please contact: llgcarlein@llgc.org.uk

Please note that if you have forgotten your original ATHENS password a new one will be generated for you and emailed to the email addressed supplied by you. This password should again be changed by logging onto https://auth.athensams.net/my.

 

 

Re-registration

 

Your Athens Personal Account expires on the same day as your Reader's Ticket. You can view the details by logging on to https://auth.athensams.net/my and selecting Account Details.

To re-register please send or bring with you a complete Reader's Ticket application form to the Library ensuring that you have placed a tick in the appropriate box, stating that you wish to have access to this service.

Before your ticket can be issued, you will need to provide 2 proofs of identification, one of which must show your current address. You will also need 2 passport photographs, which can be taken free of charge at the Library. You must collect your reader's ticket in person; it cannot be sent by post. You will be notified by e-mail when your Athens Personal Account has been reactivated.
