The National Library of Wales holds a vast array of different materials within our collections, from books, periodicals and newspapers to manuscripts, maps, photographs, paintings, archives, films, CDs and electronic resources.

We also hold a huge collection of materials relating to Wales and the Celtic Nations.

Viewing The National Library of Wales’ collections

To gain access to our collections you need a valid National Library of Wales reader’s ticket. This will gain you entry to our Reading Rooms, and allow you to order items for viewing within the Library via our online catalogue.

Some of our collections have been digitised and can be enjoyed via our website on the Digital Mirror. This online collection is continually growing, so remember to visit often to see new and exciting additions from our collections.

The National Library of Wales collections

The Library collections began with the establishment of a Welsh collection at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. They were enhanced by the donation of Sir John Williams, a physician and book collector. He promised to give his vast collection (over 26,000 books and manuscripts) to The National Library of Wales if it were situated in Aberystwyth.

Since 1911 the Library has enjoyed the right to collect a copy of every printed work published in the UK and Ireland. Our collections also grow through purchases and kind donations by individuals and institutions alike.
