Visitors using the lift

Building Accessibility

 

Parking

 

There are 7 designated disabled parking spaces at The National Library of Wales:-

 

  • 4 are located in the car park at the side of the building adjacent to the road crossing
  • 3 are located at the side of the building opposite the exit from the new car park

 

 

Entrance

 

Visitors with mobility difficulties can enter the Library building through the entrance located on the ground floor level, at the front of the building. A ramp and automatic doors allow easy access into the building.

 

 

Animals

 

Assistance dogs are welcome to accompany their owners into the Library. Water is also provided for the dogs at the ground floor entrance.

 

 

Wheelchairs

 

Three wheelchairs are available for visitors use; they are located at the ground floor entrance of the building. Porters are at hand by the entrance if you require assistance.


Contacting the Library prior to your visit is recommended, although staff are available during the Library's opening hours if you require assistance.

Lifts

 

There is a lift located to your right (next to The National Library shop) once you have entered the building. The lift also includes a voice service indicating the floor levels. It will take you to:

 

  • 0 floor (main floor, above ground entrance '-1') where the reception area is straight ahead and on your right, and the Reading rooms are down the corridor on your right.
  • 1 floor - where the Gregynog Exhibition Gallery is located.
  • There are also exhibition spaces on the ground floor (-1 on lift), turn right after The National Library shop.

Toilets

 

There are 3 access-friendly toilets situated around the Library:

  • Ground floor straight ahead from the shop and turn right at the end of the corridor
  • Ground floor behind the staircase leading up from the Peniarth Exhibition
  • Floor 0 (main floor, above ground floor entrance) at the top of the staircase leading up from the Peniarth Exhibition

 

 

Enquiries and Admissions

 

Information leaflets are available in the following accessible formats:

 

  • Large print leaflets
  • Audio leaflets (with tape players available at reception)

 

Questionnaires regarding the services at the library are available in large print form



All enquiry desks and counters have access friendly lowered sections as well as a loop system.

 

 

Exhibition and Events Area

 

Large text folders of exhibition captions are available in the various exhibition spaces. Visitors are welcome to take these around the exhibitions with them to view the exhibits while reading the text.


Exhibition captions are located at a low level at the bottom of exhibits.


Where possible low exhibition cases have been used at every exhibition.


Chairs are located in the Gregynog Gallery and near the plasma screen in Peniarth.

 

 

Shop and Restaurant

 

The National Library shop is situated adjacent to the ground floor entrance. It is also possible to browse and purchase from our shop online. If you would like to contact the shop please call 01970 632 548.

Pen Dinas restaurant is situated on the ground floor level to the right of the entrance. Its opening times are 9:30 - 4:45; the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Emergency Procedures

 

In the event of an emergency/evacuation, if it safe to do so, disabled visitors should leave the Library through the same door as they entered, the entrance on the ground floor.

If disabled visitors are on the 1st floor, in no event should the lifts be entered, visitors should remain on the 1st floor and make themselves known to a member of staff.

If a wheelchair user is located on the main floor (0 floor, where the reading rooms are located), there are two designated refuge points where they can be taken:-

 

  • In the stairwell at the back of the south reading room
  • In the link to book stack 1 from the north reading room

 

Individuals should make themselves know to a member of staff who will take them to the refuge points.

Using the Reading Rooms

 

 

 

South Reading Room (Non-print Materials)

 

 

Relevant equipment:-

 

  • Magnifying glass available to borrow from enquiries desk
  • Screen reader machine (Supernova), which magnifies text and images, controls colour, brightness and contrast according to reader's individual needs. Reads or spells out any text on screen: documents, menus, web pages, emails etc in Welsh and English. Readers are welcome to bring their own Braille pads to the Library and attach these to the screen readers.
  • BigKeys Keyboard. Please ask at the South Reading Room enquiries desk for further information.
  • BigTrac Mouse. Please ask at the South Reading Room enquiries desk for further information.
  • ScannaR Text scanner (ScannaR), which will read aloud any text document in seconds. You can control the speed and volume and select any of these languages - English, French, German, Italian or Spanish.
  • Video Magnifier (Smartview). The SmartView video magnifier is a low vision aid that enlarges objects, actions and text onto a display screen.
  • Text Magnifier(Aversion 300). This machine is located in the secure area of the South Reading Room and it can magnify text which is then displayed on the visual display monitor.

 

 

 

 

North Reading Room (Printed Materials)

 

 

Relevant equipment:-

 

  • Magnifying glass available to borrow from enquiries desk

Reads or spells out any text on screen: documents, menus, web pages, emails etc in Welsh and English.   • 21" screen PC at the far end of the catalogue room for readers with visual impairment who wish to search the Library's catalogues. Attatched to the 21" screen PC is a Text Magnifier (Avervision 300) which can magnify text and then display it on the 21" screen.
  • Video Magnifier (SmartView). The SmartView video magnifier is a low vision aid that enlarges objects, actions and text onto a display screen. This machine is located in the catalogue room.

 

 

Relevant Areas:-

 

  • Table no. 12 is designated for wheelchair users. It is located opposite the automatic doors.
  • Staffed photocopying unit, where photocopies may be enlarged from A4 to A3, to assist reading.
  • Designated laptop computer desks with sockets, at the western end of the reading room, near the newspaper tables. Readers, however, may not use digital scanners to scan any of the Library's items.
  • The Erina Morris Room, near the microforms reading room, where users may use tape recorders or similar sound recording machines, provided other readers are not using the room at the time. Please ask the staff of one of the Enquiry Desks before using the room for this purpose.

 

 

Useful information:-

 

  • The OPAC, a computerised catalogue, offers the possibility of entering keywords such as 'large print' into the main database, which will produce titles that are either published in large print, or discuss large print works.
  • The Reading room open shelves house a number of reference works, which may prove helpful to disabled users. Class H for example, houses the 'Directory for disabled people' (HV3024.G7) and 'How to get equipment for disability' (HV1559.G7).
  • The Library has a collection of 'talking books' in the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, together with listening equipment. A catalogue of Welsh language sound cassettes for the visually impaired is available, including Welsh writers reading their own material. All material in The Screen and Sound Archive needs to be requested at least 24 hours prior to viewing.

DRWM

 

Providing a welcoming environment for all our visitors is an important principle behind the DRWM experience. We are fully committed to making your visit as easy and enjoyable as possible.

 

  • DRWM is situated on the ground floor on the same level as the entrance. Turn right directly after the shop, and then right at the staircase, and the DRWM entrance is on your left.
  • Low level counter and loop system in the box office
  • There is a wide wheelchair access door into the auditorium.
  • 4 chairs which can be removed on request to provide wheelchair spaces
  • An infrared transmission system is available at the DRWM, and the best quality of sound is through a headset (these can be provided when entering the DRWM, please ask a member of staff). Alternatively, hearing aids can be switched to the T position.
  • Assistance dogs are welcomed within the DRWM.
  • There are 2 access toilets located on the DRWM floor (ground floor)
  • 3 temporary wheelchairs are available from the ground floor entrance
