Passport Art

In the People’s Democratic Republic of Brooklyn, artist Youme Landowne has created 111 colorful passports to examine the meaning of citizenship and common experience in a diverse urban environment. Each passport in the exhibition now on display at the Brooklyn Public Library features photographs of the borough throughout different periods of history. Although none of the passports yet has an owner, blank pages are provided to encourage their eventual owners to tell their own stories.

Landowne has written and illustrated children’s books and led community mural projects throughout the world. While the People’s Democratic Republic of Brooklyn is not overtly political, it uses the heated conversation about immigration to challenge notions of identity.

The People’s Democratic Republic of Brooklyn will be on display at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch at Grand Army Plaza until June 16. Admission is free.

The library is open seven days a week. For questions, directions, or more information about this and other exhibits, visit the at library’s web site or call 718 230-2767.

Race Violence in the Reconstruction Era
Three distinguished speakers will discuss the campaigns of violence aimed at suppressing the newly won rights of African Americans in the post-Civil War era. In 1875, an army of Mississippi whites embarked on a terrorist campaign to suppress the newly won rights of freed slaves and blacks. Campaigns of this nature were not uncommon and were so successful that, a century after Appomattox, black Americans were still fighting for rights that had been in the Constitution since 1870.

Speaking will be: Nicholas Lemann, dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University and author of Redemption: The Last Battle of the Civil War; Annette Gordon-Reed, professor of law at New York Law School who earned a place in history with her first book, Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy; and Brent Staples, an editorial writer for the New York Times and author of the memoir, "Parallel Time: Growing Up in Black and White."
