Civics

Citizens Union - This century-old civic organization monitors the City Council, has provided a voters guide to every Primary and Election in New York since 1910. Its research and education arm, Citizens Union Foundation, founded in 1948, publishes Gotham Gazette.

Citizens for NYC - NYC group with a very local focus - improving the City's neighborhoods. A humble site, but chock full of resources.

City Club of New York -

City Project - City budgets. CP's Big Apple Budget School runs workshops on major NYC budget and policy issues. CP's advocacy arm -- Alterbudget -- targets specific policy proposals.

Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century - This group of young NYers (20-40) seeks to increase the political awareness and participation of others their age. A thorough site with excellent links.

Ferrer Supporter Look to Amends With Bloomberg - A number of powerbrokers who endorsed Fernando Ferrer in last November's mayoral election have sent kiss-up letters to the re-elected Mayor Bloomberg.

Industrial Technology Assistance Corporation - A non-profit that helps small manufacturing firms stay competitive in the digital age.

NY Civil Liberties Union - The NY arm of the national organization dedicated to protecting citizens' civil rights.

NY Democrats - All the info on elected Dems.

NY GOP - same info, other party.

NY Historical Society - The regularly updated homepage of New York Historical Society includes a daily "This Day in New York History," as well as illustrated descriptions of past, present and future exhibitions. Also available is information about the group programs and an online store.

NY League of Conservation Voters - This statewide nonprofit endorses candidates for local, state and federal offices; lobbies elected officials on environmental issues, and keeps the environment in the public dialogue.

NY Public Interest Research Group - A fixture in the NYC policy dialogue, featuring the irrepressible Gene Russianoff. With info on their latest campaigns. Find your council member by inputting your address with NYPIRG'S CouncilFinder.

NYC Americans for Democratic Action - Political advocacy group lobbying for left policies. Their site, though no eye-catcher, details their work - school vouchers, the Charter Revision Commission, campaign finance, police brutality. You name, they've protested it.

NYC League of Women Voters - Elections and voter info.

NYCivic - Founded in 2002 by former Parks Commissioner Henry Stern, this one-man good-government group offers regular opinion pieces about an eclectic mix of public policy issues, and invites reader response.

Project Vote Smart - Enter your zip code to find out who represents you. Extensive info about candidates in all levels of government. Great links.

The American Institute of Architects, NY Chapter - NYC architects weigh in on NYC planning, building and preservation issues.

The Independence Party of New York - All the info on the state's third largest party.

The Political itCH - The political itCH (the CH is for City Hall), is a report on what's being written about NYC politics in the city's papers. Bob Hardt of NY1 squeezes it all into a narrative and throws in a bit of his own color each weekday.

Women's City Club of New York - Includes their most recent reports, a calendar of upcoming wccny events, as well as the histroy of this NYC institution (currently, their site is only visible in Microsoft Explorer).
