Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description
Amazon.com gift certificates can be used to purchase almost anything in our store, including most items sold by Marketplace sellers and Amazon Merchants (except The Bombay Company, Circuit City, Eddie Bauer, Newport News, Nordstrom, Spiegel, and Ultimate Outlet Brands). For more information, see the Fine Print above. Sending E-mail Gift Certificates: When sending e-mail gift certificates, please be aware that some e-mail programs may block or even delete e-mail messages which originate from an address not specified by the recipient as an accepted address. All Amazon.com e-mail gift certificates are sent from gc-orders@a2zgiftcerts.amazon.com. If you are concerned that your recipient may have e-mail filters turned on, you may want to send or reissue the gift certificate to your own e-mail address and then forward it to them or print it out to give to them. Redeeming Gift Certificates: When you enter the certificate's claim code for the first time, the certificate is automatically redeemed onto your account, and this information is logged into our database, even if you don't place an order at that time. After you have entered the claim code once, you do not need to enter it again--even if you back up and change other information in the course of placing your order. If you receive an error message that the gift certificate has been redeemed, and the funds are not being applied to your order, it could be that you have more than one Amazon.com account, and that the funds are redeemed to one of your other accounts. Questions about purchasing or using a gift certificate can be sent through our Contact Us form online.

What a joke. Do not rely on this as a gift, they will not send it., August 21, 2006
Reviewer:G. S. Ryan (Waco, TX) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was sent a gift certificate by my soon to be in-laws for my birthday (early August). I received an e-card with a personlized birthday greeting, and a note from Amazon stating that I would be receiving another email the next day that would provide my redemption code. I waited, and then I waited. About a week passed, then I called Amazon to find out where it was. The first answer that I received was, "Dummy, it is probably in your junk mail folder". But, first, it was not, and, second, I buy from Amazon regularly, so I know that I get their messages. Amazon could not confirm that they even sent the email with the confirmation code in the first place!
I was promised one within 24 hours, but it did not come. Now, two weeks after I was supposed to get an email from Amazon, I had to call again. And guess what? I was told that it was probably in my junk mail folder (they still could not confirm whether it had ever been sent!). This time after waiting and waiting on hold, they gave me the code over the phone.
It took over two weeks to get a certificate that should have been automatically generated. And the customer support was laughable. Do not get this as a gift for anyone.

Tips for Immediate Printing, Lost e-Cards, etc., October 22, 2005
Reviewer:Sterghe (Pennsylvania, USA) - See all my reviews
Others have already listed the excellent reasons for loving Amazon gift cards, so I won't repeat them. Since I read some of the negative reviews, though, I thought I'd post a couple thoughts:

1. If you want to print the gift card the same day you buy it, just send it to yourself in an e-card and print from there. No biggie. (You can also do that if you want to send just the claim code to someone in a different e-card or e-mail, btw--just be sure it's someone who knows how to use it.)

2. *Most* people have e-mail filters of some kind. Mail from Amazon may get marked as junk mail, or may even be blocked. Don't send a gift card to a work e-mail address (it's probably not work-related mail anyway, and that e-mail account belongs to the employer, not your sister-in-law or whomever). Even Amazon can't force a delivery to an e-mail account that automatically directs all Amazon mail to a junk folder, or worse, blocks the sender altogether. A surprising number of people set their e-mail to accept messages only from known senders, too. (Hotmail, for example, offers this option and LOTS of spam if you don't take it.)

To overcome this problem, I'd recommend (a) NOT using a spammy subject line like "A Gift for You," (b)checking with your recipient before sending to make sure the e-mail address is active, and (c) sending the gift certificate to yourself and then remailing from your personal account if there's any doubt about your recipient's e-mail account accepting/rejecting it.

3. I don't know about Amazon for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if, right around the holidays, their servers get as busy as the lines at the mall. A gift certificate sent on Christmas Eve, for example, might take a matter of hours to go through instead of minutes. (Forgive the guess, please, Amazon, if I'm wrong here.)

4. Check your own e-mail settings to be sure that *you'll* receive mail from Amazon. Before you send your card, you may want to disable blocked senders altogether, for example. In general, I prefer directing junk mail to a junk mail folder where I can look it over quickly before it's tossed away. If you do this, and also check that folder and all others carefully before emptying them, you won't miss whatever mail Amazon sends.

Just a few thoughts . . .

Code Does Not Work, January 9, 2007
Reviewer:Katie "Dark Musashi" - See all my reviews
I got a gift certificate for Christmas, and when I put the code in at checkout it just appears as if nothing happened. However, the website of course has no problems accepting credit cards. I keep getting emails back saying they need more information, which I have sent, and all the responses seem to be automated. I have not yet successfully redeemed the card after a couple weeks. All this was after not even receiving a claim code at all and complaining about it. I don't know what is so hard about a gift certificate but I will surely never buy one for anyone else from this website, even though I order from Amazon.com all the time and they are usually very helpful.

I have ordered a $50 gift certificate yesterday evening, send it to myself and received in within 10 min. So I cannot complain.

Nightmare is the word, January 8, 2007
Reviewer:Walter R. Neal Jr. - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I ordered a book and four electronic gift certificates. The book and one of the certificates were delivered. Somehow the expiration date on my credit card was altered on three of the certificates, resulting in the card being declined. The FIRST I KNEW OF THIS was when I contacted customer service after hearing from one of the recipients that nothing had been received. Not ONE WORD from Amazon about a problem with the credit card. I have been a customer of Amazon for many years, but no longer. I do not recommend them.

Should Have Taken Advice!, January 8, 2007
Reviewer:Vikki (RSM, CA USA) - See all my reviews
After I read several reviews that these gift certificates weren't being received by people, I hesitated before making my purchase. Unfortunately I did end up purchasing a Christmas gift certificate for my brother-in-law on December 14th to be sent on December 25th. He still hasn't received it. I tried to cancel the order today but was told I couldn't. However, the customer service rep was able to give me the claim code. Hopefully it will work when my brother-in-law tries to use it!

Needless to say, I do not recommend purchasing gift certificates from Amazon.

It can take hours (up to 48) to receive the GC by e-mail.
