NBA jumpers lead
NBC to a weekly win

Finals put ratings over regular-season average

By Kevin Downey

The highest-rated NBA Finals since Michael Jordan’s last games in 1998 pushed NBC to a win last week with summer ratings that bettered the network’s regular season average.
NBC’s 5.0 rating is two-tenths of a point better than what it had for the season.
The first three games of the L.A. Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers matchup all topped the ratings.
Ratings for the games are up 34 percent compared to last year with an average 11.1 rating in the men 18-49 demo.
Game three was the highest-rated show for the week with a 9.5 rating among adults 18-49 and an average of 20.3 million viewers.
Over 42 million people watched at least part of the game, according to NBC, which is an increase of 20 percent compared to last year’s game three between the L.A. Lakers and the Indiana Pacers.
A related pre-game show and NBC’s "Weakest Link," including a special NBA episode, were among the highest-rated last week too.
NBC ended the week with eight shows in the top-10.
Besides the NBA games, most of its Thursday lineup and "Frasier" were among the highest-rated shows.
Even NBC’s new summer sitcom, "Kristin," did relatively well. It only ranked No. 45 with a 2.9 rating but improved on a special lead-in episode of "Frasier" and beat "DAG," which previously had the time slot, by 38 percent.
Perhaps the only downside for NBC was the ongoing series of primetime "Saturday Night Live" specials.
The latest, the best of its game show parodies, ranked No. 54 with a 2.6 rating.
But it did better than the movie, "A Night at the Roxbury," based on the SNL skit, which preceded it. That ranked a poor No. 75 with a 1.8 rating.
Still, NBC’s 5.0, adult 18-49 rating, was nearly two times better than ratings on competitive networks.
ABC and Fox both had a 2.7 in the demo, CBS had a 2.6, UPN had a 1.4, and the WB had a 1.1.
ABC, meanwhile, had the NHL Stanley Cup games.
The last game in the seven-game series was the highest-rated hockey game since 1987. And ratings in some key demos were up from previous years.
But game seven between Colorado, which won, and New Jersey ranked only No. 31 last week. And ABC’s rating in the 18-49 demo last week was flat compared to the prior week and was down about 39 percent from what it averaged in the regular season.
The ratings decline is due largely to the summer repeats that dominate the broadcast networks’ summer schedules.
Most of the networks are also burning off weak performers from the regular season.
ABC, for example, brought back its reality show, "Making the Band," about the boy-group, O-Town. Two episodes of that show ranked only No. 77 and No. 83 for the week with a 1.5 and a 1.3 rating, respectively, in the 18-49 demo.
CBS was killing off its canceled "Ladies Man." That show only ranked No. 73 for the week.
Both networks fell far short of NBC even in the household ratings that CBS won last season.
    NBC had a 7.7 rating and 14 share to CBS’s 6.7/12, ABC’s 5.0/9, and Fox’s 3.9/7. UPN had a 2.1/4 and the WB had a 1.8/3.
