Despite heavy rains this winter and recent cooler weather, harvest season is well under way in Mendocino County, and most wine grape varietals are ready for the picking.
Just a few weeks into harvest, local growers say they have already taken in close to a third of their crops, and the rest are following suit quickly.

At the Jim Healy Memorial Tournament held at four different locations in Fairfield, Napa, and Vacaville, the Ukiah boys water polo team finished 2-3 over the weekend against an elite field.
"The competition was very good," said Ukiah head coach Rick Cleland. "You're talking about some of the best teams in Northern California coming together to play."
Ukiah lost its first game, 11-5, to Ignacio Valley, and bounced back in the second game for a 10-6 win over Foothills.

Coming Full Circle
At a recent showing of the works of local digital storytellers at Ukiah Players Theatre, the idea of stories and life taking us full circle came up more than once.
Like mandalas, designs created for meditation by Buddhist monks (derived from the Hindu word for concentric energy circle), "full circle" means more than going in circles or spinning our wheels.

STAY WELL' PLAN INSTEAD OF MediCal? PETITIONS TO PUT MENDOCINO PLAN ON BALLOT NEXT JUNE. Petitions to put Mendocino County's "stay well" health plan on the California ballot are starting to circulate throughout the state for next June's election, according to a Stockton doctor who is backing the initiative drive.
The statewide campaign was launched in August by Sajj Dharnidharka, M.D.

One of the legacies of former county CEO John Ball is the county's new Planning Team, a small group of planning department staffers recruited to work just on the bigger picture: the general plan, the Ukiah Valley Area Plan, a coastal program and the county's housing future.
Last week the team hosted a get-together with a group of consultants that will help shape the Ukiah Valley Area Plan.
This decade-old plan which was never enacted in the county is basically back on the drawing boards.
