PhD Program
Doctoral Program
Maryland's Ph.D. in Journalism and Media Studies is a three-year program designed to prepare students for careers in university teaching, academic and industry research, and media consulting. The first two years of the program consist of coursework in theory, research methods, journalism and an outside area of interest. The final year is spent researching and writing the dissertation. Most successful candidates enter the program with a master's degree, but that requirement can be waived for people with extensive professional news experience. See the Ph.D. program requirements and suggested course of study, as well as Professor Haynes Johnson's perspective on the program's mission.
