College scholarship awards increase 14-fold in last decade

Four new awards total $9,500 in financial aid

For immediate release, Jan. 11, 2006

College Park, Md. - The Philip Merrill College of Journalism has established $9,500 in scholarship and financial aid in the last few months through four new awards. These scholarships bring the amount of donor-supported financial aid the College awards each year to more than $340,000, nearly 14 times the amount given out by the college a decade ago.

The new awards are:

The Gene Roberts Award. An endowed fund established by College faculty member Prof. Gene Roberts. Provides reimbursement of travel expenses up to $5,000 (depending on annual endowment investment growth) to enable an undergraduate or graduate journalism student at Maryland to travel outside the U.S. on a specific journalism-related itinerary or project. Preference is given to journalism students enrolled in the College's public affairs reporting track.

The Freedom Forum Journalism Scholarships. Awards of $1,250 to an incoming freshman and $1,250 to an outstanding undergraduate (print, broadcast or online) with financial need. The scholarship will be funded for two years from a $5,000 grant authorized by Freedom Forum trustee Ken Paulson, editor of USAToday and a member of the College's Board of Visitors.

John Story Cleghorn and Nona Reese Cleghorn Scholarships. Two scholarships of $1,000 each, funded by Professor and former College Dean Reese Cleghorn in honor of his parents, for an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student in the College.

The Frank Quine and Mary Ellen Doran-Quine Journalism Scholarship. A $1,000 non-renewable award, funded annually by the College’s Assistant Dean Frank Quine, to a rising junior or senior undergraduate in the news-editorial (print) program with financial need and high potential as a professional journalist.

The College makes awards to current and incoming undergraduate and graduate students in the journalism school. The application deadline for the 2006-07 academic year is Feb. 25, 2006.
