For immediate release, Feb. 20, 2006

COLLEGE PARK, Md.— Philip Merrill College of Journalism junior Pouya Dianat placed fifth in the national Hearst Journalism Awards program for sports and news photography. This is the second of three photo categories in the competition, which is often regarded as the Pulitzers of collegiate journalism.

Dianat, who is an assistant managing editor at The Diamondback, will receive a $600 scholarship.

He was selected for this award from 54 students nationwide from member colleges and universities of the Association of Schools in Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs. The top four contestants qualify for the semi-finals.

The Hearst Journalism Awards program, now in its 46th year, added photojournalism to its competitions in 1970. This is the third Hearst award the College received this cycle. Earlier, Justin Fenton (’05) won fourth in the feature writing competition and senior Mary Schneidau took 17th in the editorial writing competition. Rachael Jackson (’05) tied for second place in the national writing championship last year.
