Yeah yeah, everyone else is linking to it, so I might as well: Star Trek Inspirational Posters.

On Notice...

This is mostly hubby-Eric's idea after reading the MetaFilter thread I posted to in the last linkdump. If you don't get the joke, don't worry. Most of the rest of the world doesn't either...

Yet Another Linkdump

Don't visit Naples.

I'm finding myself more and more interested in Brian Wood's Northlanders.

Tour the Seattle Underground on Flickr. I still haven't done the tour, and I've lived in Seattle all my life.

I don't "do" vblogs and podcasts... I like to read, and I understand better when I see words rather than hear them. So I wasn't going to link to Tim Leong's VBlog. But... oh, just go look. It's about 7 and a half minutes.

Newsarama Blog picked up on the worst job in the DCU link I posted.

Want to read 52? Haven't had the cash? Newsarama reports that DC has teamed up with UGO to offer the first five issues online for free.

Can I just say again, "what an idiot!"

Unrelated to Anything Else

In my morning weigh-in, I discovered that I have lost 20 pounds since I started my lifestyle changes on June 10th. So of course, I'm going to celebrate with a blizzard. Don't worry, I've budgeted my calories for it. But hey, 20 pounds!

There's A Blizzard....

Don't forget to go get your Blizzard today, guilt free. It's Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen. Find a local DQ that's participating, and go enjoy some ice cream.

I have no words for this, except that if anyone believes that a munchkin hung himself in the Wizard of Oz, they ought to get a Darwin award and be removed from the gene pool (seriously: one of the most secure, carefully maintained, and expensive sets in Hollywood history, and people still are stupid enough to think someone could hang himself on the set and not have it noticed???!?? What, are people drinking stupid juice on this one?)

Massive Linkdump and Bookmarks Cleanup

Welcome to Geek City!

CBR Wizard World Photo Parade Sunday.

Lying in the Gutters has an interesting link to a possible swipe of a Mandrake comic by... Daleks?

Huh. A freelance photographer distributed by Reuters altered at least two images, and badly, too. His entire library of work has now been withdrawn. When I say "badly", I mean really badly. I could've photoshopped a better picture than that, and I'm lousy at image manipulation (look at the before and after pictures).

Before Alteration After Alteration

Here's a nifty document that tells us How the RIAA Litigation Process Works. In short, it's a bogus operation run by criminals who have enough money on their side to bully people into paying up rather than fighting. I really hope that the RIAA is completely driven out of business someday due to their illegal and immoral suing of random internet users. Think you can't be sued because you've never downloaded a song? Think again.

Just after I finally get to see Mirrormask on DVD, the Museum of Hoaxes presents this article on the BEK phenomena. By the way, Mirrormask was pretty good, and very haunting. It's staying with me, days after I've seen it. And the commentary was good, as well (and put a voice to Neil Gaiman for us).

Another perspective on terrorism. And while we're at it, let's teach our kids just like terrorists do.

Augie lists an addictive game. It looks very simple, but for whatever reason I can't seem to master it. I must be thinking in terms of arcing instead of straight lines.

Cool Maps.

Library Stuff talks about WorldCat, which is a huge database of library materials.

Garrett tells us about Gimpshop, which turns the open source freeware image edited tool Gimp into a Photoshop clone. I've never actually used Photoshop, and I'm wondering if it's worth it for me to get Gimpshop or not. Opinions welcome.

Maybe we'll get a break?

Record profits, but they can't do basic maintainence. I've said it before, I'll say it again: I want a hybrid that will run on either gasoline or biodiesel. Seems like the best of all worlds to me.

Shipping List

I haven't done a Previews review in awhile, but maybe I'll just take a look at the upcoming shipping list and see what's on it that I'm interested in. A quick glance... not much....
SECRET SIX #3 (OF 6) $2.99
Uh... wow. I can't even remember what's happening in this one. And I seem to recall that I read the most recent issue not too long ago.
GIRL GENIUS VOL 5 TP $19.95
GIRL GENIUS VOL 5 HC $32.95
I'm getting the hardcover for myself, and the trade for my little sister.
SUPERMAN #655 $2.99
If Kurt Busiek wrote this, I'll get it.
52 WEEK #14 $2.50
I confess, they've reeled me in, and I'm addicted.
JSA CLASSIFIED #15 $2.99
Does this issue finish off a storyline or start a new one? I just want to say, once again, that my favorite character of the JSA is Ma Hunkel, the original Red Tornado.
SQUADRON SUPREME #6 $2.99
Can't remember what's happening in this one, either. Do you think that's a sign I should stop reading a book? If I can't remember what happened in the last issue? I mean, I could quote you bits of the last Aquaman tale. But quite of few of these books I simply can't remember what happened last.

Huh. That's it for this week. What a small shipping list.

Sunday Morning Links

CBR WizardWorld Photo Parade.

Oh ouch! I'm not fond of bee stings myself. Via Diane Duane.

It's Seafair in Seattle. Nothing irritates me more than the whiners who start complaining every single year when the Blue Angels come to do their air show over the lake. "Oh, the jet engines scared me!" "Oh, they make so much noise!" Good grief! They've been doing that show over the lake as long as I can remember, EVERY SINGLE YEAR. If you don't like Seafair, leave Seattle for a week when the noise is happening. Sheesh.

Some Links

Comic Book Urban Legends Revealed #62.

Cheshire Crossing links Alice, Dorothy, and Wendy in a fun little comic about their lives after Wonderland/Oz/Neverland. Not the best art I've ever seen, but the story made me laugh aloud at points. Via Oz and Ends.

The Mad Bun is free to all and sundry who wish to read the entire story. Go thee hence to Girlamatic and check out the story so far.

I'm slightly tempted to get Narbonic Volume 3, if only because of the back-up story by Phil. But maybe I ought to read some of the web comic first.

Random Thoughts

Lots of folks are linking to the Hello Kitty Vader, but the source is here. It's a photoshop job.

Snopes has information on free military shipping kits and personalized postcards to the troops. I don't support the war, but I have nothing against the men and women who volunteered in good faith to protect their nation.

Diebold Machines Even LESS Secure Than Previously Thought

Slashdot and Boing Boing are both reporting on this story which alleges that Diebold voting machines can be made to read an unsecured card with the flip of a single switch. In short, the machines are completely unreliable and totally useless as voting machines. They are designed to allow unauthorized people to alter their programming with a flip of a switch.

This is too important to ignore. All Diebold voting machines MUST be returned to the manufacturer as intentionally flawed, and any county that's been tricked into buying these machines must be refunded.

Random Thoughts

Ooooh, here's a great essay by Folksinger Janis Ian, who goes into why free downloads of music are a GOOD thing for artists, and lost sales by the music industry are more an indication of poor management on the parts of the recording industry than anything at all to do with downloads. Putting her money where her mouth is, Ian put up a page of free downloads of her music. The article is four years old, but the points she makes are still valid. Via Garrett.

Top 50 Movie Endings of All Time... lots of spoilers.

A friend of my sister just visited and directed me to the George Reeves Memorial website, where the hometown of George Reeves (which is where my sister's friend is from) are selling stuff, including a commemorative video, in an effort to preserve Reeves birthplace. My sister's friend, Veronica, worked on the video, which is on this page: GRMF "Coming Home to Woolstock" DVD.

This One is for the In-Laws

Edge City, a comic strip, has had a bit of a pug run lately. Starting here, the story revolves around Rajiv, who is having troubles with his love life. So he gets a pug, Twinkles. I particularly like this strip, as it makes a fun point about SF fans in comparison to other "fandoms".

Anyway, this is for my in-laws and their pug, Buddy.

Danes are Very Forgiving

Remember the lying imam who made up extra cartoons and added them to the Danish ones? The imam whose actions resulted in riots and the burning of Danish embassies? Colleen Doran lets us know where he's been and what he's up to now, and it seems rather ironic, considering the circumstances.

Personally, I would have asked him to stay in Lebanon. He's now hiding behind the flag he burned, and using the embassy he helped to burn down to escape violence.

San Diego Bits

The news will keep filtering in over the next few weeks. Here's what I found of interest today.

Here's a neat round-up of the all-ages stuff at San Diego. I'm particularly happy to see Oddly Normal is going to have a second volume soon.
