It was another fine week of comic book purchasing here in the desert, and although I enjoyed everything I bought, I have a few issues with a few issues.  So we’ll forego the poetry for this week (to paraphrase the Moody Blues in that classic Simpsons episode: “Can the poetry, let’s review some comics!”).  I’m going to have to get all feminist on your asses, y’all!  I hope you can forgive me!  Our themes this week are: Sex played for laughs, the success and failure of non-linear narratives, and when writers might be a bit to clever for their own good.  Also, I point out the greatest injustice the world has ever seen.  It’s true!

Now this is what I call a good comics-reading week!  I bought a baker’s dozen of books, read all but one of them, and enjoyed the hell out of most of them.  There’s something for everyone this week, people, so if one doesn’t strike your fancy, simply move on to the next!  And fret not - I will warn you away from those books that, sadly, just don’t work.  That’s what I do for you, the good readers!

It was a pretty good week for comics for those of us who were left behind when the SDCC opened.  Yes, we must cling to our love of comics by buying floppies instead of standing in line for hours so some creator can sign our mint-condition #1 issue!  Sigh.  Of course, it just wouldn’t be a good week if I didn’t trash one book!  Luckily, that book is first in our alphabetical round-up!

I had to wait a whole day to get my comics this week, and you better believe it made me grumpy!  But I made, good folk, I made it through the rain (literally, as it actually rained for a few hours here in AZ on Wednesday morning) and now I bring you my thoughts.  I wonder if everyone appreciates what I go through for you people.  I pick up first issues of things so you don’t have to, and let you know if they’re worth it or not.  Yet do I get nominated for Nobel Prizes, Victoria Crosses, Congressional Medals, or get considered for canonization?  I do not.  Where’s the justice, I ask you?????

It’s always a fun week when I reach double digits in books that I purchase, because usually there are quite a number of good books out of which I can discern a theme.  I’m going to do that this week, as once again, for scientific purposes only, I look at gratuitous breasts in comic books!  I did this some time ago, and people pointed out to me that breasts have always been gratuitous in comics, but it doesn’t hurt to remind us that it’s just a little silly.  So, as I tell you about this week’s books, I will also examine breasts!  It’s all very sociological - trust me!
