  Defense Budget Tutorial: A preview of next week’s major DOD appropriations bill gimmick (Briefing)
 On Thursday, July 20, the Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to “mark up” the fiscal year 2007 Department of Defense appropriations bill. Straus Military Reform Project Director Winslow Wheeler explains in this “tutorial” how a gimmick will make it appear that a huge ($9 billion) cut is being made, when in fact no such thing will occur at all.

  Weapons of Terror: Freeing the world of nuclear, biological and chemical arms (Reports)
 The Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission released its report "Weapons of Terror" last month to the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Chaired by Dr. Hans Blix, the independent international commission analyzed threats under which the world is living today - including 27,000 nuclear weapons - and recommended 60 proposals on how the world could be freed of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.   UN Small Arms Conference Collapses; U.S. Key Resister to Compromise (Press Release - Announcement)
 The two-week UN Review Conference on Small Arms concluded Friday, July 7, with no agreement. CDI Senior Analyst Rachel Stohl, chair of the Small Arms Working Group, noted that “The failure of the conference to agree on any document squandered an opportunity to establish critical agreements to combat small arms trafficking.”

  Power of NRA Showcased in U.S. Delegation to Small Arms Conference (Press Release - Backgrounder)
 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The UN Conference on Small Arms opens today in New York. The U.S. delegation to the conference contains three public delegates, two of which are NRA board members, the other, a former congressional representative, was given an "A+" ranking by the NRA while in office. CDI Senior Analyst Rachel Stohl was rejected as a U.S. delegate, although she is a renowned international expert on small arms and was nominated by a U.S. Senator.  In light of the House Armed Services Committee markup session on the fiscal year 2007 national defense spending request, CDI Senior Fellow Lawrence Korb is joined by experts at the Center for American Progress, Foreign Policy in Focus and the Security Policy Working Group in producing "A Unified Security Budget." The report outlines a rebalancing of national security spending that better reflects today's security challenges.
