Qualifying revised from this weekend
Sporting regulations - FIA changes approved
Max Mosley (GBR) FIA President in the FIA Press Conference.
Formula One World Championship, Rd 8, British Grand Prix, Practice Day, Silverstone, England, 9 June 2006

The Formula One Commission met in Paris on July 6 and suggested revisions to the sporting and technical regulations. The Commission’s proposals were then sent to the World Motor Sport Council for ratification.

Crucially, the FIA’s statement also revealed that any changes to the 2006 regulations will come into effect this weekend at the French Grand Prix.

This means that the third and final session of qualifying in Magny-Cours will be shortened by five minutes and all three qualifying ‘knockout’ sessions will now be 15 minutes long. Any laps completed after the end of any of the three sessions can now be used by drivers to qualify for position, as long as they started the lap before the chequered flag fell. Previously a driver had to complete a lap before the flag for it to be eligible.

To ensure that drivers taking part in the final shootout qualify on their race fuel load, the cars may be weighed after qualifying and again once they have been refuelled just prior to the race - a difference of no more than 3kg will be allowed.

Another proposal, approved by the World Motor Sport Council, is the end of the use of third cars used during Friday practice sessions. However this change will only come into effect next season.
